S.T.A.L.K.E.R = Terrible?

If it wasn't for the bloody awful combat, Stalker would likely be one of my favorite games. I love the setting, the look of it, the atmosphere, but the fighting sucks.

That is quite insane that you've raced all the way to Pripyat in such a short space of time. I would imagine using a guide would pretty much ruin the game - it's all about exploring and working out for yourself how to survive. It just reads like you really want to play it like it was Call of Duty or something, which is fine if that's what you're after, but you're not really going to get much of a flavour for the game as it was intended to be played doing that. It would surely take all the fear, suspense and exploration out of the game - which were the foundations of the whole thing for me.

I agree that I've probably spoiled part of the enjoyment of the game by following a path instead of exploring on my own, but really what I was after was to just advance enough in the game to pick up some decent weapons and items, and also to find out if the game could give me a better opinion of it's self than the one I'd gained by playing the early parts of it. I would say that I am enjoying it more than at the beginning, but still, not enough to actually bother reaching the climax of it. :(

combat with the assault rifles is MUCH better if you don't use the ironsights for some reason.
