Well I am taking this as a failure and a learning experience.

I have had the S1 sitting in the cupboard for awhile and after buying some cleaning fluid, tape and compound decided to have a go at fitting it to my Sapphire 4870 512

I used

I decided to clean off the compound from the S1 this may have been a mistake and lead to the issues I had later.

Sorry for the bad pic camera seems to do that every now and then, from the orginal forum topic I know some people had to mod the last ram heatsink so I did as well, seem to work well

Fitted into the PC, now it worked first time was really pleased as the 4870 is the noisest part of my PC and it was now silent, then I checked out the temps.

With the standard cooler it never goes above 80, and at first it seem that the S1 was doing the same, but then the temps climbed. I shutdown the PC when they hit 89 C

I dismantled and replace the compound on the chip and gave the screws another tweek.

Refitted I powered it back up and watched. This time I shutdown as the card neared the 95 C mark :(

So the card is back to normal and the S1 is back in its box. This hasn't put me off replacing the stock cooler and I know people have had good results with the S1, maybe its not for me.

Well I hope this helps anyone else wanting to replace the cooler, as someone who has never done this before it was fun and easier than I thought even if it did not go the way I planned.

well 1, you need a fan on there! A 4870 is not going to run passively....

Also you need VRM sinks.

OMG I just noticed the VRM, Grrrr

Suppose I could strap a fan to it just wanted to keep it quiet.

right off it give it another try

I'd definitely second the fan comment, Accelero's are good but you're really not going to get something like a 4870 running passive.

Well I have had to put it on hold the fan I have is rubbish so going to order a load of silent ones for the PC and one for the S1

All you need is a decent 120mm running at 500-800 rpm which will be near enough silent. I use a Nexus, personally. My 8800GT is hitting about 53c under load in my rather warm room with my sound card blocking half the cooler.

Yer its gone back in the cupboard for now till I order the fans one monday.

A little annoyed with the thermal tape really doesnt hold as well has the sticky pads that the S1 had, might look at something else once I get the fans

Do what I do with ramsinks use a bit of arctic silver in middle of chip and use a tiny tiny dab of superglue in 2 corners works a charm.

To get off simply use a razor blade and slide through breaking the superglue contact.
