S2000 or Z4 3.0?

How often will you drive it - daily or once or twice a week?

The BMW will be an easier proposition for daily driving, but the S2000 is more of a drivers car, although it may get tedious.

Only 1 way to decide - test drive them both. :)

Mine's fine daily driven, again they are not as bad as made out, bit like the Dc2 Type R Teg. However they arent a car you can really munch up motorway miles like some cars, not sure what the Z4 is like either

Id be tempted by the TVR :o

BUT despite being bargain buys generally, they're notoriously unreliable and have running costs of a much more expensive car.

With the S2000, you have honda reliability in a sportscar

BM and Porsche aren't my cup of tea, theyre more of a posers car IMO. Say what you will, thats the image they have.

Considered an Elise ? Caterham 7 clone ?

S2000 is a real drivers car complete with high reving exciting engine.

The Z4 being a v6 will have a more relaxed power delivery. I would imagine it would eat up motorway miles much better than the s2000.

Depends what you are after.

Cheers for that post Simon....going to have to organise a test drive this week I think. Few questions...

a) How much does servicing cost?
b) How much are rear tyres? Ive heard that for the smaller wheels you can only use certain types?
c) What sort of mpg do you get?

Tempted by this outsider too  not tempted by the running costs :o

Having driven my dad's Griff 500 on Good Friday, I wholeheartedly endorse the outside option! :)

I told you so, I told you so :p

Z4 for me - nice 3 litre inline six > stupid VTEC engine*

*Sorry Simon :(

Youve never driven an S2000, a car is more than just it's engine. :p

Oh I dunno, I'm doing 50miles each way to work at the moment along the M4 and it's fine.

Thing is, with the roof down, you don't care about the rest!

Oh and the heater is fearsome! So on those cold, crisp, clear mornings, roof down and heater on. Excellent!

S2K for sure.....if you want the torque 6 cyl feel then just slap on a comptech supercharger. The z4 will not be any sort of competition then and certainly not in the looks department.

They came as standard on MY02+ cars iirc, and fold up/down between the 2 seats.

They do make a difference too, mate folded mine down at the weekend and you could feel a lot more buffeting.

Agreed the interior is more luxery than the S2000. The S is an old design now though, was a 50th birthday present to Honda itself and was always designed to be a sports car/track focused car. It was originally competing with the Z3, now BMW latest car is still only competeing with the s2000, not really surpassed it.

Dash isnt too bad:

I had to decide between a new S2000 or Z4 recently, so researched and drove both models whilst making my mind.

I would disagree that the S2000 sounds better engine wise, but it is completely a personal preference in that department - the engines do sound very different.

I think that both are fantastic cars, and I would recommend either. They are sufficiently different in a competitive market to both exist.

I chose a Z4 over the S2000 because it felt a bit more "special", and I preferred the aesthetics (which obviously some people hate).

The hard ride on the Z4 appears to have been tweaked within the last model revision, it's not as hard and unforgiving as it used to be (especially on runflat tyres), but it still is firm. It feels really stable and "squatted" when going round corners, with not much body roll. I would suffer more if my local roads were in a state of disrepair though.

Both are great cars, drive both and start deciding from there. The S2000 (especially the earlier ones) can be a real handful day to day though. They are fantastic when you're in the mood to push it and loon, but require a lot of concentration the rest of the time to ensure it doesn't try and spit you backwards into a hedge. I'd love an S2000, but not as my daily drive.

The Z4 I haven't driven, so only know it by reputation, so I'll let others fill in details about that :)

Probably right comparing stock vs stock to be honest.

They need concentration when drivenm hard.

Normal driving they don't suddenly jump off the road, contrary to popular myth.
