What are you guys paying for your insurance? I am 26 with 5 years NCD and am getting quotes for around £900, I'm currently paying £290ish on my MX5.

Is the AP2 the one to go for? If so is that 04 onwards? Reading some articles the differences make the car in terms of a slight engine tweaks, or is this nonsense and its just a facelift/different alloys/wheel set up?

I'm paying about £700 on mine, 8 years no claims, 28 years old.

AP2 is a decent shout - to be fair you'll be fine with any of them; My and Simon have the older more "raw" version (v plate), they were dumbed down a bit as more versions were released - For example, ours don't have traction control and a more aggressive setup.

I'm not aware of any engine tweaks, but there was suspension revisions and different setups brought in to dial out the "snap" oversteer. As well as the typical facelift and interior extras as you get with every version.

31 ( :( ) and paying £360 with 11 or so years of NCB.

I have a 2002 model but prefer the facelifts to look at, not driven one though to compare.

As said most of the mechanical changes are around the suspension I believe, I've heard things such as the ARBs being made thinner so that the car will roll more before letting go rather than gripping up to the last second as the earlier cars supposedly do with the thicker ARBs. Then on the very late ones with VSA they reverted back to the thicker ARB.

Also believe they moved from a throttle cable to an electronic throttle on later cars but no idea how much difference that makes to the drive.

AP2 is the 2.2 init? Some seem to refer to the facelift as AP2 though.

Any idea when that was? Not 2004+ I hope :D

Honda Chassis codes refer to the VIN number...

What has a facelift UK model got on it to clarify this issue I keep seeing? :p

I'm 36 and pay £500 per year for mine.

We still have the AP2 designation in the UK for the facelift but we didn't get the 2.2 engine like the USDM

There was never an AP2 designation for the UK. They are all AP1 but are referred to as "facelift AP1". It's a common mistake and understandable as even Honda dealers refer to them as AP2 sometimes.

2006 and it makes no difference.

The later cars are softer and less prone to swapping ends in the hands of idiots. Some don't like this (me included) so have the earlier model year geometry setup to get back the pointyness.

I would buy on condition and history rather than age. I prefer the look of the facelift so my preference would be to go for a 2004 to 2007 model. 2008 - 2009 models have had reports of engine issues with some guys in the owners club covering less than 20k miles before needing a new motor. The general consensus is that the newest S2000 you should buy is a 2007.
You want a FSH preferably from a specialist rather than Honda. Honda don't know how to look after these cars and frequently miss service items that are unique to the S2000.
WHatever you buy, make sure you get proof that the geometry is correct and that the geo bolts have been greased. If they can't provide proof, INSIST that the geo is done and the bolts greased as part of the condition of sale. Seized bolts can present you with a £1k bill to have them replaced so this is vital.

Here are all the model changes by year for the UK:

MY02 differences

• Glass Rear Screen
• Cd player with tweeters built into the door
• Slightly restyled polished alloys
• Chrome rings around the rear lights and chrome front light surrounds
• A softer suspension setting which makes the car slightly less "pointy"
• Repositioned headlamp washer switch

MY04 Differences

• New front and rear bumper design
• 17" wheels with different Bridgestone tyres
• New front and rear lights
• Facelifted interior
• Some suspension changes which include a slight ride height change and a little softening of the rear end.
• Colour coded headlamp washers
• Factory fitted alarm
• New colours...

MY06 Differences

• New Colours - Deep Burgundy Metallic, Bermuda Blue Metallic
• New Interior Colour - Brown Leather
• Drive-By-Wire Throttle System. Ues a computer sensor to input throttle as opposed to pulling on the throttle cable
• Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) with traction control. A combination of computer controlled throttle and individual wheel braking to control sudden changes in vehicle behavior. VSA has a turn-off switch where the defrost button (moved) used to be.
• 20 lbs heavier
• Redesigned road wheels
• Redesigned steering wheel
• Brake Assist, which helps drivers apply full braking pressure in an accident avoidance situation via the ABS actuator. Braking pressure is maintained momentarily after the driver's initial braking action to help the driver stop promptly. It deactivates when the driver releases pressure on the brake pedal
• Exterior temperature gauge
• New seats (interfaced to air bags for weight and position)
• 4 of the 8 speaker audio system are integrated roll bar speakers
• New intake manifold, fuel rail, intake support bracket, and injector cover
• Only one cam sensor
• New style map sensor
• IAT sensor has moved to the rubber intake tract
• Fuel line at engine is now a quick-release type
• Air pump, associated lines and and control valve, have been eliminated
• Fan switch in the radiator has been replaced with a second CTS, in turn the fans are now computer controlled
• HO2S in the header is now referred to as an Air fuel ratio sensor
• New exhaust center section

I'm looking for a S2000 around april next year, mainly looking for a 2004+ model with under 30/40k miles.

I'm 24, so I know I'm going to be stung on insurance but don't really mind.

I would buy on condition and history rather than age.

Definitely, partly why I ended up with an earlier one as it was good condition, as well as local (needed something quick and didn't have much time if any to travel) and in budget.

The early pre 2004 cars had a different rear subframe. It was changed in 2004 to dial out the passive rear steer

The 99-02 are the most snappy due to dampers and anti roll bars. Even with geometry the post 2004 are still a little soft. 2009 ones go back to being more like 2000 models.

All UK cars are AP1s

Insurance is £350 for me. When I was 24 it was £1200. Try A-plan,sky and Admiral.

I've had mine 6years now and it's on 145k. Other than the ABS light that's come on lately that I can't clear - it has been trouble free. I still have yet to drive a car with the same rawness/ daily drive ability

Slightly OT - who are you insured with on your MX5 Hurf, and is it a MK3? I'm paying substantially more than that and I've just turned 27, also with 5 years NCD. Up for renewal soon so need to start having a look around.

Solid upgrade, let us know about the 5, I'm interested price dependent.

It's still not certain, got another property purchase on the horizon so that will trump everything although it is a long shot but if I do pull it off then I'm still perfectly happy in the mx5, it's the main reason deciding what to upgrade too so difficult.

Don't worry you have first refusal, I havnt forgotten.

im also looking at buying a s2000 in the next few weeks / months, im 28 with 7 years NCB but with 1 fault claim on a company car, best quote so far is with a company called 1st Central £570pa

Adrian Flux, 27 with 4y NCB is £750. Postcode seems to make quite a difference and once I move to Brum I expect quite a hike. Worth it though!

As far as revisions go, it depends on budget more I think. I preferred the facelift and as it happens a 2006/7 car was bang on budget at the time. Take care with late 08 and 09 cars as they have engine trouble, there's a big thread on s2ki.com about it.
