Hey Guys,

My mate's S2000 service light keeps coming on due to a manifold/decat. He thinks maybe also the sensor is busted, but what he's more concerned about is that the car is in some sort of 'Safe Mode'

Is that right, because of the service light the car is not running fully?

We know some cars can go into safe mode to protect it, but I thought that was for more expensive cars?

Cheers for any info!

Was he heavy handed with the o2 sensor when he swapped over the manifolds?

Does using a blowtorch count? :o

They (manifold - decat) were done at the same time, and he did tell me that they cut out the sensor with a blowtorch cos' they couldnt get it out?

He's getting a new sensor because we both agree if the dudes went to the trouble of blowtorching it out then it must be fudged....he's just wondering if the car is in limp mode as Durzel mentions above.

There's your problem.

More than probably in limp mode. Engine can't get an O2 reading and so will go safe.

You need an O2 SIM as a traditional sensor won't like a decat (if it's anything like the K20). Won't a decat also need a programmable ECU + remap to run safely with a decat?

It will.

only reason i got away with removing the centre cat on my vec is that the o2 sensor is on the pre-cat, which is still attached to my exhaust. I've only partially decatted.

If he can still hit Vtec its not in safe mode, to kill the light he should be able to get away with just grounding the sensor wire

Pretty sure he can still hit vtec, but he drives like an old lady so I will make sure, I thought the ECU would adapt to the change in gasses ((obv. if the sensor is working correct, debatable))....?

He's coming round later to see what I've found out, definitely needs a new sensor and should it continue then the ECU isnt liking the changes made through the decat?

How much is a remap on these types of car? He's already spent a small fortune on it, and is now after an invidia exhaust!

Madness.

He's already disconnected the battery to see if it resets but after a while it came back on.
