I want to use S3 standby on my HTPC, it stands off fine, but doesnt seem to want to come back on

I have set it to S3 in bios, and choose standby in windows, once its off, it wont resume via remote or case power button press, and i have to restart

Asus P5L-MX
E4300
Windows XP SP2

Any ideas ?

Thats usually the case. What voltage is your 5V rail?

It can also be caused by usb devices. So try unplugging all of them.

Also the gpu can responsible if your getting the situation where you hear the pc come on but the monitor doesn't come on.

5VSB is the one to check. Thats the entire power for everything that needs it once the main PSU rails are shutdown.

It powers memory, various parts of the motherboard, USB (sometimes can be disabled), PS2 Keyboard&Mouse connectors, It can even supply power to lan cards and other devices.

I believe my Seasonic has 3Amps on 5VSB, which is only 15 watts of usable power. That has to power the memory, keyboard, mouse all kinds of rubbish.

Older designs of PSU frequently had an amp or less on 5Vsb.

If you have a lot of USB devices plugged in, it could be straining the standby rail, this can be helped by using a powered hub, which will supply independant power to your USB devices, leaving the PSU more able to keep the system memory powered up.

Forgot to mention. Different motherboards have different options for resume from standby. It can be as complex as a series of key presses, or it can be just pressing poweron again etc.

Many systems you configure in bios how you wish resume to work. My first 'standby' type computer used an asus motherboard, and would poweron only if you pressed Pause/Break on the keyboard. My current system (Intel Baxaxe) can power on from keyboard (any key or defigned), mouse, lan, power switch all as configurable options. So check your bios (or manual) to find out which devices are supposed to work. I am guessing your remote control receiver is USB, so you would need to ensure powerup via USB is supported and enabled.
