s9 replacement - better camera?

Contract is up currently on a sim only 30 day rolling.

what phone would be a good replacement for the S9?

flagship contracts seem quite pricey now, tempted to buy a phone outright.

no fixed budget per say but whats a cheapish option for a better camera on the phone, S9 camera seems lack luster now.

what would be a upgrade without breaking the bank?
 
Define 'cheapish' :)

Pixel 4a for £349 would be a good bet when it becomes available (1 Oct for the UK iirc), especially if camera is important.
 
The iPhone 12 is due out soon and the non-Pros are meant to come with OLED screens this year. They might push your budget by another £100 but will be supported for years and will almost certainly have excellent cameras and the fastest SoC on the market.

I've seen mentioned the Poco F2 has a better camera than the Note 9 did, which was already an upgrade on the S9 :)

That might do the job and is plenty powerful at the price. I almost went for one.
 
So I think I've decided to keep to cheaper phones.

phones only used for taking videos/pictures +social media/internet browsing

I have no need for a powerful phone so the pixel 4a or Oneplus nord are looking like a no brainer.
