Guys help me out here , I am looking to replace my ZT with a small estate car/large hatch but it has to be no larger than the ZT because of the space in the garage, i only have about 2" to spare length wise.

I need to fit a Large Akita and 3 suitcases in the back and based on my garage space i keep coming back to the Saab with an estate back door. I don't mind the look of it but i know most will say it not a good drive or the best fit and finish but i have been more than happy with my ZT its just not practical to have a saloon anymore.

I am open to any suggestions, my ZT is a 2.5 V6 so i am not so worried about insurance and running cost's, Budget, anything in and around 6-8k would seam about right.

DO NOT BUY A SAAB DIESEL.

I bought one May last year, and it is THE worst and most expensive car I have ever owned.

I have a 2.2TiD and it's cost me over 2k in repairs at only 5 years old and 60k miles.
I know three others with the 1.9TiD and at 4 years, it's cost them 1.5k.

They're ****e, don't do it!

Seriously, I hate my Saab!

Kae.

Must do oil changes every 6k or the engines die of oil starvation as they clog the oil pumps.

Buy a car with more than 40k on it and expect to pay to have the sump dropped and cleaned as a preventative measure.

I drive a July 08 Saab 9-3 1.9TiD Estate daily. It has 100000km's on the clock, 25000 of these have been in my care.

The engine is crap. Simple as that. It's not nearly as frugal as my e39 530d Sport was, very unrefined and feels slower than my old Navara.

It is however, quite comfortable to be in and apart from the slight drone from the engine fine for munching up the miles. As long as you keep it on the boil, it's quite fun on the backroads too. I had a lend of a Saab 9-3 2.0T for a few weeks while an insurance repair was undertaken. It was quite an improvement on the 1.9TiD.

I wouldn't buy one though.

Plain and simple, Saab do not make and have never made a diesel engine.
AFAIK the old 2.2 is an isuzu design and the 1.9 is a GM/fiat design.

The petrol engines in the newer 93 sport saloon (2003-now) are supposed to be very good, with none of the previous pcv system issues that resulted in blocked oil pickups. (the B205/B235 engines from 1998-2002, this issue was rectified by a redesigned breather system)

Kae is wrong with the sump bit as the engine in these 93's are completely different (B207 & B284) (Btw, hello Kae i assume it is you from UKS) Kae is right with the oil changes bit, as it is important to get the oil changed at the correct interval with the correct grade and type. If the car is maintained properly it should be quite reliable. My 900 (ok different model) is now 15 with 179k and it has never broken down and it is still running on the original turbo, timing chain and head gasket. Neither me or the previous owner have bothered with the 6000 mile oil changes, instead it got changed every 12000 miles and always mobil1 0w-40 fully synthetic. If you drive the car very hard then i imagine 6000 mile oil changes would be wiser, but i try to look after my car as i want it to last. The only let down on mine is that the suspension bushes are now showing their age.

Compared with an MG ZT it should seem like a good car (might not handle quite as well, though if you fancy improving things the hirsch suspension upgrade is supposed to be excellent), you'll need either the 2.0 hot or the 2.8 twin turbo (if you want more power/v6 sound). The models to look at are aero or vector sport. (linear is the basic model and vector are one up) Avoid the diesels and the 1.8 generally as these engines are a bit weedy and the 1.9 diesel likes to be driven on the motorway all the time else it stuffs up the egr system. Later models (2004>) are also said to be slightly more reliable.

Thanks Kei

As i only do about 10k a year i was edging towards the 2.0t hot , is that the 210bhp one ? Mind you the V6 is appealing , i take it that's the same engine that's in the vectra vxr.

My Dad had a 95 Estate 2.2 diesel for 5 years (bought new on 54 plate) and never had a problem with it. It was a great car. Just replaced it with a Honda CR-V diesel and in some ways he is missing the Saab.

I couldn't be certain about the 2.8 v6 but i believe it is of GM origins, so quite likely to be the same as the vxr.

The 2.0 Turbo is 210hp 300Nm and the 2.0t (light pressure turbo) is 175hp 265Nm In 2005 you could only get the 210hp 2.0 on the aero, all the other models got the lpt version. The sportwagon is 4670mm long if it helps.
