Hi Guys I'm in the process of negotiations for buying a W Reg Saab 9-3 2.0 Aero (HOT) Convertable... Black with allllllll the toys!!...
(Wife wanted 'Lime Green' , But I couldn't find one in that colour!! ;) )

Sorry Phased out there!... :D

Anyhew, I don't like the ICE in the car!, its a Dual Din 'Thing' is the only way to describe it!... but it does have a seperate display and Steering Wheel controlls!...

I'm looking at some nice single din units (Double Dins are Rare or Expensive and mostly FUGLY!!) from Alpine, Pioneer and Kenwood... But I'm unsure weather thay will interface with the Display or Controlls (I know the Kenwoods do with the controls but not the display!!)... What HU's would any of you recomend!???... upto about £350!.

Plus Anyone know how to fit the unit in the Car?... Any Din Hole Adapters out there?... or Double Din Cages so I can fit a Processor etc!?!... What Leads/adapters might I need for the display etc??...

I've tried Googleing but not found much!... :(

Cheers
Sim

Check out a company called autoleads for facia's and Din fillers, maybe cages too. You're right that mose double din units are pap.

£350 is a nice amount for a head unit but I guess £50 of that will be taken up by the facia and the steering wheel stalk contol.

Have you thought about upgrading the speakers? adding amps? even going as far as subs? etc. No worries if that doesn't interest you, but i'd at least swap out the speakers! Even for some £50 speakers!

Yeah I've looked at speakers as people have said even with a decent HU and the Lid up its still pretty muddy/quiet with the Factory Speakers!...

I've seen Pioneer do some Direct Replacements for Saab 9-3's... Not too sure about Sub's though!... as when the lids down you loose nearly half the boot so we need all the space we can get!...

I'll check out 'autoleads'...

So Any:

HU Recomendations,
Speaker Recomendations (dunno the size!?!),
Facia Companies,
Adapters/Leads etc...

Cheers
Sim :)

I've only ever seen adapters for Alpines that let you retain the steering controls and also the seperate radio display.

Incartec (sold on caraudiodirect) sell adapters for most cars that give you the stalk controls and kind of a semi working seperate display (it will just display the brand of stereo you are using and also say vol up/vol down etc but don't give you any volume numbers or track names etc).

That'll doo cos the HU's got its own display!... been looking at a cuple of Alpines!... What d'ya recomend!...

I need MP3/WMA playback (which most of em do now) as I've got 5 CD's that I keep in the car with 10hours of music on each!... Don't keep original CD's in the car (specialy a Soft top) they'd get nicked!!...

I'd love to be able to hook up other stuff (Ipod, Phone etc...)

4x50watts... (ish)

Remote (either option or supplied) I'm a bit Lazy!.. though with Steering controls probly not needed!!

Cheers... :)

Sounds like a nice motor. Put a sports exhaust on then you won't need a sound system ;)

Anyway, have an ask over at saabcentral.com and see what others have done. Might be a while before you can get on as they're in the middle of a server change at the mo.

Already got a Stainless Sports System (about 2" Bore) Sounds Very Throaty!... :D (shame its not the V6 version!!)

I had a Y reg 9-3 so am pretty familliar with that vintage of Saab.
I've been into my car stereo for years, but didn't bother upgrading the HU in the 9-3 as its
so tightly integrated into the dash/steering wheel/extra display.
I personally think that a single DIN unit with a double-din blanking plate will look
really rubbish, so would consider getting a speaker and amp upgrade along side
a reasonable sub in the back.

I would highly recommend taking your car along to a decent Care Stereo place (something
like Wentworth Car Radios) as they will be able to advise you as the best way to
get the sound you want from your car.
