Now the season is underway I thought we should have a sack race thread.

Over to you, Arsenal fans. ;) :p

I really don't think Wenger will go now the season has started, but surprisingly many of his remaining supporters have turned on him. Ian Wright has always spoken fondly of him and has now asked for him to go, which I thought was quite surprising.

De Boer seems to be in the most immediate danger, not going well at all. Bilic too.

Whoever made the decision to appoint de Boer should be sacked. You decide to do a complete 180, appointing a manager with a completely different philosophy and way of playing and then give him 4 games to make those changes.

It's ridiculous. A club focused purely on survival shouldn't have appointed him to start with either.

:D

West Ham fans are not happy.

From the West Ham statement:

Moyes won the Community Shield at Wembley in August – becoming the first Manchester United manager ever to win a trophy in his first season in charge, but left the club after just ten months.

:D

I think at this stage an extension is best for all involved, it's no good working under the assumption things will definitely implode. His time at Man Utd so far hasn't been the 'norm' so perhaps he's started averagely and will end up getting better, rather than the other way around. I know the club want to keep him long term, whether that's feasible remains to be seen.

Given how things haven't exactly gone as planned so far this season though, it's a big risk (as with most things).

They did look at other options first but that was due to pressure from select people within the club, Woodward and the Glazers are business first and Mourinho has the most impressive track record on paper. That is what I understood anyway, there's no way of knowing for sure.

I don't get the impression they are waiting for someone better to come along, because without going for an up and coming manager which is a gamble, who is there?

I know these payoffs aren't a great deal of money to a club of our financial standing, but the £8m to get rid of Moyes after 9 months was pretty awful. :p

I can't remember all the details at various points, I know Fergie spoke to Pep about the job, but I don't think he was offered it. I understand what you are saying, and Mourinho is not indispensable by any means. It appeared to me they kept Mourinho at arms length for some time, for the reasons you stated, and he is very demanding of the board and causes controversy at times.

As I mentioned earlier, I have been under the impression that Woodward wants Mourinho to stay and build a legacy at the club, how likely that is remains to be seen. It's easier for him to just have one manager in place (even if his spending is higher) rather than changing often. Look how it went with Moyes and then LvG - major hassle (and with LvG, lots of money wasted on various deals).

The question then is, why are the club sorting him out a new contract now?

Yes, stability is critical and I said before that if he isn't going to PSG then a new contract would be wise. How many managers stay for 6 years at the best clubs? It's a vote of confidence but of no real consequence either way.

I have plenty of concerns about Mourinho but I am hoping he's not a spent force just yet. As I have said consistently since SAF retired, I wanted him as our manager and I still do. I've wondered if he can change and despite the evidence stacked against him, I've yet to write him off.

He won't want to leave the job having not won the league ahead of Pep, that much is certain.

That's true, but nothing is certain. I think the good thing is that once we have finally established a proper squad, you don't need to keep spending £150-200m per season (although you never know with the way the market is going), you can just get a couple of players in every summer.

I think money will be kept available as it will help sustain the Man Utd brand, having top quality, recognised players is important, as is the top 4. I don't agree with the suggestion that funds will be cut as soon as we get a couple of top 4 finishes in a row. Gone are the days where SAF could win leagues despite replacing Cristiano Ronaldo with Valencia...
