Safari keeps redirecting me to a Google App during search

Title kind of explains it, but starting around a month ago. When searching in Safari (using Google as the default search engine) it keeps taking me out of Safari and to a Google app.

I can click the top left to take me back to Safari but I then have to click the back icon in Safari a couple times to get me to the search screen. Otherwise it just restarts the redirect.

I’ve tried googling this but can’t seem to find anything else about it.

Anyone have any ideas before I give up and just switch to Chrome?
 
Usually what happens is a popup occurs asking if you wish to continue in safari or download google chrome, for some reason if you aren't clicking download it is auto sending you to their app on the app store, I occasionally click it by accident and it's annoying.
 
Weird. There’s definitely no pop up.

I wonder if I’ve accidentally clicked something in the past that just auto forwarding it!

Unbelievably annoying!
