Hi All, got myself a MSI 5850 Frozer2 from overclockers and the fan seems a little loud to me. Read up loads on this forum about over clocking it but im a little scared to do it, as i cant really afford another card if i blow this one up. Can someone please tell me a safe % to have the fan. The stock is set at 55% , as most of you prob know, and ive just put it down to 45%. Is this ok?

You just want to set the fan to whatever speed keeps temps below 90C really.

You can go over that but if you keep the card below 90 it will last longer and be more stable.

I use MSI Afterburner to run a custom fan profile so it only speeds up when needed and it keeps mine at max 87.

I just installed MSI Afterburner right now. Set the fan to 45%, seems very quiet. Really tempted to over clock this baby, just a little scared to though, lol. Can i ask you what yours is clocked to ? Idle temp on my desktop top is 36c.

If you create a fan profile in Afterburner which keeps the fan about 30/35% below say 55c then get it to start to climb after 55c then it should be good, i did this when mine was in the system, it would max at about 60c and about 40% fan i believe.

+1

I have a similar profile for my overclocked GTX 470. 30% until 50c then goes fairly aggressive, good at 60% fan speed. Keeps it nice and quiet for when browsing net/office work. Peaks around 78c after a long stint of BFBC2. A 5850 with better cooler should stay nice and cool at even lower fan speeds.

So if i set it to 30%, in the CCC , will it automatically up the fan speed if the card starts to get hot ?

Sorted it, looked in the MSI Afterburner program and found it. Thanks guys.
