"Safe" GPU temperature?

that does sound high for a idle temp. my 7800gt is about 60c idle and sometimes up to 90c load but normally 80c load.

i say take the 8800 gtx out and blow into the fan (or use some compressed air) and see how much dust comes out :)

no thats normal, but use rivatuner to turn the fan on 100% then try o/cing it
If you don't mind the noise a little

edit.

8800's run quite hot normally, you can't gauge a 7800gt to a 8800 there a different card altogether

I had a gfx card like that, it went upto 100c and I was a tad concerned. It was packed full of dust I found out

Still it didnt artifact at any point. I think safe is anything upto 85c, 78 idle isnt leaving much leeway for an hours worth of gaming

Try stressing it with ati tool to see what load temp is. Im pretty certain the gtx starts throttling at about 110c.

what fixed fan speed have you set your gtx to with expertool, I have mine set at 70% for my 8800gts 640. I can't really hear it at 70%.
