Safe OC temps for CPU

Ok, due to ridiculous prices around at the moment i have abandoned my plans to upgrade to a E8400 and GTX260.

Instead i am going to OC my E4300 (hopefully just on the stock cooler) and spend £100 on a 8800GT for a cheapie upgrade.

I play at 1680x1040 btw.

With Prime blend, what temps are acceptable to see for CPU when 100% loaded? or put another way what temp is unsafe?
 
63-67c after 2-3hrs of orthos, I wouldnt go over that.
And 8800GT isnt 100quid now, it's like 65-70max, you can get 2nd hand one for about 40.
If you're looking to spend about 100 then your best bet is to get HD4850 or if your board is good you might consider getting 2nd hand 8800GT and E5200. Or if you stretch budget a bit you might get 4850 and E5200 ;).

65-70? Hmmm. I've just found one for £82 new, so that's reasonable to accept they can be had for 65-70.

Thanks for the advice on temps anyway, the E5200 and 2nd had GT might be the way to go, could get that up to 3GHZ easy.

I ran Prime and the temp peaked @ 46 or 47 degrees. idle @ 24 degrees.

E8500 @ 4 GHz with a Zalman Nvidia Cooler.

60 degrees is probably fine, but personally I wouldnt want temps above 50-55 degrees tbh.

I don't know that much about this lark, but I'm sure temps are going to go higher with a greater overclock / increase in Volts. Obvious really.

ALSO I would seriously consider what you're wanting out of your PC. It's easy to get sucked in to the whole benchmarking / top overclock mindset. But if you can manage a little longer on what you have and save the money up for something better. Waiting 2-3 months to actually save the money will benefit you a lot more in the long run.

If you ARE going to overclock your E4300, spend a little money on a decent cooler. Stock coolers are OK, but you WILL notice a big difference in temps with a good cooler.

And £25 - £35 aint nothing really considering how much a night out, fags, beer or just eating **** will cost you in 3-4 weeks.

A lot of people do buy 2nd hand, but personally i'd buy new. the 8800GT is a fantastic card, so to is the 4850.
 
Update:

Up to 2.6GHZ from (1.8GHZ @ stock) on stock cooling, ran Prime 95 blend, and the CPU didn't go over 62 degrees. System around 36 degrees.

I have 7 120MMM fans in my case, would they be having much of an effect on cooling the CPU?
 
Not sure for that CPU, however I and others are fine with temps below 75-80C on 65nm. I don't have any experience with 45nm, although I imagine the range of temps to be similar. Voltage is the thing to be carefull with, upto 1.5-1.55 on with good air/water cooling, and for 45nm 1.42 is most peoples limit, as there were reports on anything more degrading the CPU.

My CPU is 65nm, not sure whether you thought it was 45 or 65. I haven't touched the voltage yet, the vcore shows 1.25 volts.

Ah i see what you'e getting at upping the voltage is where the temps begin to rise rather than increasing the FSB?

So, sooner or later as i continue increasing the FSB, i will have increase voltage to supply enough juice?
 
rather than making a new thread, what max temps should I be looking for on a e6300? also whats a good starting voltage and a max voltage?
