Safe Overclock?

I put together my 6300, DS3 etc. just under a year ago and immediately clocked it to 2.8GHz (7x400). It was steady and ran fine for a number of months although around 6 months ago, a chip on the motherboard burnt out so I had the board replaced.

Since it's replacement, I haven't bothered clocking it at all through fear of blowing the same chip and having to replace it again. Temps were always steady at around 45ish under load (if i remember correctly). The only doubt that i've ever had over my system is the PSU which is an Enermax 500W Liberty, however, temptation is getting the better of me and I want it running a bit quicker than 1.86Ghz.

Is the PSU up to the job? Is it a safe bet to overclock on a 500W PSU or would I be pushing my luck?

Could the blown chip on the motherboard be put down to the PSU or was I just unlucky?

Thanks :)

I would say you were just unlucky if you didn't go crazy with the voltages.
500w is more than enough for your rig.
If you really want to be 'safe' then overclock as far as you can on the default vcore (1.35v).

Well that's good news. I was always running it at stock volts and i'm not running sli or crossfire so I might give it another whirl. Fingers crossed :)

Yeah you should have no probs with that o'c, i am only running a 480W (in sig) and it goes along no problem at 3.15GHZ with a vcore of 1.31v.
