I managed to hold off on buying a new PC, and will be building something this year. I am waiting for the new AMD CPU’s, and will be getting a 3080. What are some safe purchases that I can get at the moment to prepare? Gen 4 SSD? Case? Power supply?

What are some things I should avoid purchasing until I have the CPU etc?

Thanks!

I wouldn't buy anything unless you have a use for it now, or you have good reason to believe there's going to be a problem with supply or increasing cost.

Anything (except the case I suppose) that you can't use now will be sitting untested and wasting its warranty until you have all of the other parts. If you have something dead on arrival, you want to be able to deal with it immediately, not weeks or months into the future.

SSDs and ram are quite cheap at the minute, psu's are just in short supply but having a few months to look around means your more likely to get the one you want.

Don't buy anything. RAM and SSD prices are dropping daily due to oversupply, and will continue to do so for at least another 3 months, and PSU's are popping up all over now.

Unless you see a mega deal on something where you won't lose any money if you change your mind before you get the CPU. e.g I got several Asus B550 TUF Gaming Wi-Fi boards for sub £120, which are still ~£170 everywhere, can't lose on a deal like that.

Memory prices are coming down at the moment so hold off buying SSD's and Ram until your ready to purchase everything.

Gotcha! Thanks guys. Tbh my main worry was moreso not getting something now, and then prices potentially increasing when everyone’s scrambling to get new PSU’s etc for the new amd cpus and nvidia/and GPUs.

also, any idea of the restock time of 3080’s once they’re initially sold out?

Yeah none of us work for Nvidia or board partners, so no idea on distribution :p

Gibbo will have more news later this week hopefully and be posting in the relevant threads I'm sure, as he's already mentioned.

I'd agree with others and just buy the full lot when you're ready to get everything. RAM and SSD prices are still coming down, so I wouldn't worry about anything going up really tbh.

For your NVMe I wouldn't bother with Gen4, if you want a nice 2TB drive though I'd recommend the Adata XPG SX8200 Pro for about £220. Cracking capacity NVME for the money.
