I'm after some software for my PC that will keep it secure, safe from viruses etc and if possible block the annoying adverts that pop up within a window when browsing the net.

I've currently got AVG 8.

is there any other software that you can recommend? I'd love some software too that can be used to block access to certain kinds of websites

Popups / adverts = Firefox + Adblockerplus
AV = Nod32 or Avira or Kaspersky

Internet filtering can be done at router level depending on the equipment you have.

Do you rate NOD etc better than AVG?

Dont have any router equipment for networking, just the Cable modem connecting into my machine. Is blocking websites done purely by hardware then instead of software? THe way I'm doing it at the moment is via the hosts file, but thats not ideal / secure enough for my liking

Avira Premium is going cheap at the moment, might be worth looking at getting a license for it.

I'd suggest using Ad-Aware 2008 and Spywareblaster to deal with spyware\tracking cookies etc. Firefox can block unwanted content with a simple right click option (as far as pictures go anyway).

do what sp00n says, and get a WRT54GL cable router, and install Tomato on it, much safer to use a router than to not use one.
