hi guys, i noticed my fan is starting up more lately, so i download istat.

hard drive at 32.C
the cpu is at 62.C
heatsink a at 55.C
heatsink b at 54.C
enclosure bottom 31.C
northbridge 1 at 50.C
northbridge 2 at 54.C

these are idle temps, so is 62.C ok?

macbook 2,1
core 2 duo 2.16GHz
1gb 667 MHz ddr2
mac os x 10.4.11

That seems a bit high. Mine is idling at 48C. Bear in mind it depends on the temperature of your room too.

Are you sure you don't have any background processes running wild? I did once and I only noticed because my cpu was always hot which resulted in 2 hours less battery time. I had that rapaport banking software installed and that caused the problems.

i am a complete n00b at macs but.

i have ran this stress test
* Open Terminal.app
* Enter: yes > /dev/null
* Press Enter

and have activity monitor open as well.
the cpu is running at 98.9% and my temp is 64.C :confused:

edit

just tried this cpu test http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/23935/cputest/

ran it on, huge, 1 repetition, and 2 instances and within 10 mins the cpu temp was 74.C so i stopped it.

i may just try to give it a clean with the hoover.
all i really do on this is web browsing, so it will do for now

had a look in activity monitor, only thing using cpu power is firefox with 4-5%
but does flicker to 12% every few seconds

I dont think there is anything wrong with your temps.

i just ran the same cpu test which brought my cpu temp to 86c to which point the fan had reached full speed at 6220rpm and it then dropped to a steady 84c.
once the test finished the temp dropped to 51c within a minute.

Does your fan speed fluctuate at all? generally my normal idle is 51c
listening to itunes which is using about 10% cpu, my temp slowly raises to around 60, then the fan will start to slowly spin up and it will slowly work its way back to 51 again, rinse repeat.

It's fine. Mine is idling at 74C right now. Anything between 60 and 75 isn't unusual. If it's still 75+C and the fans are screaming then it's a different matter...

The mobile CPUs are designed to run at anything between 0 and 105C.

thanks guys, the fan does flucuate, so i guess its working fine.
when i ran the stress test, i could hear the fan getting faster as the temps rose. but it did seem to settle around 72-74.C
its just i didnt realise these cpu's can run hotter than a desktop cpu
