Hi folks,

Having my first tentative attempt at some overclocking, and was wondering what was generally considered safe temperatures for an E4400?

This is for a HTPC machine so I dont intend to run the chip at its max overclock, but was interested to see how far I could push it.

It has the stock cooler and fan on it, as well as 2x120mm case fans that are on their minimum speed currently.

I've got it as far as 260FSB with stock voltage, and Coretemp is showing the cores at 60c, with Speedfan showing the 'System' temp at 35c.

It seems to be stable but 60c sounded a little high. Any opinions on what the max safe temp is to run at?

Any help appreciated

I would think that is probably as high a temp as you would ideally want it to be. My e6400 don't like being that hot however and usually crashes when gets around 60 degrees for too long a period. All depends on the individual chip though I guess

Fair enough, will have a play around and see if I can get the temps down a bit before pushing it again. May see if I can find a better cooler that will fit inside the case too :)

Well, they don't even throttle until 85c, so you're some way from that.

I'd be happy at 70c full load, as it's still 15c away from the throttle point, and if you're loading it with TAT or Orthos then you're realistically never going to see temps anywhere near that on day to day use.

Yes, it's generally accepted that cooler is better, but then some of the temps reported on here are in the realms of fantasy to be honest, and in my opinion of course! :)

If it's stable, don't worry about it!

I agree with Tooks my E6600 begins throttling at 85 however i turned that off and with both cores under load at 3.5Ghz it hits around 60deg top, so i don't think you have anything to worry about, use core temp to watch your temps seems to be the best tool
