Safe to plug a soundcard into itself?

I want to record some a DJ mix which means the outputs of the soundcard are plugged into the mixer, then the output of the mixer into the record/line in of the soundcard? Is this safe? Last time I tried it with my old soundcard it locked the system up and blew one of the channels on the soundcard so obviously I'd like to avoid this.

You do risk creating a feedback loop, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

As long as the line in/mic's output is muted (ie it isn't going out the line out) it should be fine.

Ah, I remember now the mic output wasn't muted on the last card.

Any ideas how you mute it on the Audigys?
