Safely clean my monitor?

Personally i just get some kitchen roll, get it a lil damp, and wipe, simple, but it works.

today I haev just noticed a smudge / mark on my monitor about a 3mm circle there or there abouts. Its defiently something on the screen as its like a raised texture..
I tried the water and cloth, but to no avail. Im also concerned about too much pressure on my screen..
Will the solution that @RJC recommended help with this and still not damage the screen?
I mean, could the solution "strip" the coating on the monitor?
