You can add more organizations that'll be doing different on this day. :)

When I was younger it was a lot different. The closest thing we had to social media was the school magazine then nothing after that.

You want us to stay safe on the internet... by giving our personal data to sign up to a giant international database of people who don't know really what they might be doing on the internet. I should give my cash card and PIN to the homeless chap that sits next to the cash machine so I know where it is if I need to get some cash out.

Raise awareness by publishing data on the site, not by collecting names and email addresses.

Man so much propaganda designed to fool people into thinking the internet can potentially be safe for kids. :(

The only way to make the internet safer is to ban kids outright. This automatic connection to the internet just because you own a smartphone needs to be abolished. We need to return to a time when the internet was only visited by enthusiasts who respected the internet itself.

A lot of the UK was getting online for the first time in 1998, and internet safety was just as relevant back then. I remember the news ran stories on perverts in chat rooms, death threats via email, the odd computer virus and there were paedophile rings back then too.

One of the internet dangers that have changed are internet trolls. Back in the late 90s, the average troll would target BBS (bulletin boards) just to get attention and to annoy the admins. It was nothing personal back then, more like a social experiment. Nowaday trolls do it more personally in that they'll target a particular person so that it's direct bullying. You see this on deviantART a lot.

Internet safety day is pointless. Just use common sense, and where relevant good parenting.

Yeah but it's a lot worse nowadays. Things like fb and insta weren't ingrained into children's culture. Nowadays they cant escape, literally in many cases, the second they pick up a phone, its just pointless selfies and friending/liking as many people/things as possible.

All this endless pursuit of safety nonsense simply drives society into paving/finding reasons and methods for kids to be on the internet. This is utterly catastrophic when half the parents out there can barely raise their kids.

We keep a close eye on what our kids do on the internet. Neither has a smartphone or their own tablet. “Can I install this app on the iPad?” “No.” It’s working well enough so far.

1st I've ever heard of Safer Internet Day, also it's just common sense, don't give kids un-monitored internet access if you don't want them to have a free reign on the net

Lolwut.

Quoted for truth.

A lot of the 'problems' on the internet existed before it, easy online access just gives them another platform. There was bullying before cyber-bullying (doesn't make either right, and both types need to be tackled), pron, kids just had to find Dad's mags (admittedly content was probably safer in them, but depends on what your dad liked).

The main problem is that 'common' sense, isn't that common.

Well he's right. Back in the day the internet was mainly only for "nerds" and porn enthusiasts. Now it's full of hipsters who don't really understand it.

You couldn't really bully someone on the internet in the old days, because no one was dumb enough to post their real identity on it. You would only be talking to an alias.
