My Dad's laptop just got infected with a malware "Security Tool". I'm sure he was browsing the naughty sites but he won't admit to it and his history is cleared XD.

He is using Firefox, Malwarebytes anti malware & Microsoft Security essentials.

This security tool malware just downloaded itself via scripts from a website. I had to manually remove it in safemode.

What would be the safest browser to use ? Or any specific scripts to be disabled?

Many Thanks

If running Windows Vista/7 then Internet Explorer 8 in Protected Mode while running in a Standard User account.

Chrome is supposed to be pretty darn good too.

Having said that, he may not have necessarily clicked anything - some malware can jump on through holes in Flash and the like.

For someone like that probably Chrome, possibly Firefox but you need to load it up with scripts really for best affect which makes it a little fiddly for normal users.

At the end of the day tho you still get users manually over-riding the security prompts and letting the malware through :(

remove administrator rights so he can't install software without the admin password, give him the password.

use firefox with noscript addon installed and adblock.

I have been hit several times with that google redirect and ie redirect malware, very nasty indeed, have no idea how it is getting on to pcs at work, malware bytes can not even clean it. I tried for 1 hour trying to clean it the other day, ended up just swapping out the pc.

Let me start by saying, eww! :D

1. Firefox + Noscript + AdBlock Plus, preferably running as another user. ( Or protected mode IE8. )

2. Standard User Account.

3. Software Restriction Policy. Set it up so that nothing can run, without Administrator intervention, unless it's already in \Program Files or \Windows

But, as he's the owner, he'll probably just override the security layers and continue with his unsafe browsing habits.

Lots of recommendations for NoScript here - the trouble is, if you install NoScript for a less-than-savvy user, I can guarantee it will end up being disabled or uninstalled in very short order, either by the user or by yourself when you tire of the endless "help, the Internet is broken" support calls.

Perhaps better just to let him do what he wants, but run the browser in Sandboxie or something similar, so none of the inevitable damage gets committed to disk.

ill probably be lynched for this here - but I set my mum up on ubuntu since having loads of issues with malware etc and she loves it. No problems since.

Good point.
