Hi all, getting a couple of machines for the place where i work. going to i7 4790k cpus but no OC. Looking for a Heatsink that will last 5 years, but because i cant guarantee how well the system will be treated when moved i need to make sure the CPU cooler wont damage anything when its moved so large towers are out of the question.

What cooler would you go for?

(AIO a good idea?)

Need answer ASAP please. THankyou!!!:D:D

EDIT: Added additional Questions!!! :P

Sorry all, i wasnt going to ask about the rest of the rig originally but i thought i might as well since i was given 20 minutes to make a spec.

Going to be for Solidworks and will be purchased in the next 24-48 hrs. We dont do analysis or rendering so only single core performance is important.

The Spec is listed below.

Looking for high reliability, reasonable dust management, and good warranty/support. Low noise will also be nice. Its an office environment so silence is not essential but shouldn't be heard over the AC :P

Better Brand of RAM to use?
Better Dust managed case?
More reliable GPU/Motherboard?

I think the GPU is overkill since on the Quadro 4000 cards we have at the moment, i see about 20% usage when spinning our largest model around (max load).

YOUR BASKET
1 x Asus GeForce GTX 780 Direct CU II OC 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £359.99
1 x Samsung 512GB SSD 840 PRO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7PD512BW) £289.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Beast 32GB (4x8GB) PC3-17100C11 2133MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX21C11T3K4/32X) £269.99
1 x Intel Core i7-4790K 4.00GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £259.99
1 x Seasonic X-Series 650w '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply £109.99
1 x Asus Z97-A Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £106.99
1 x Corsair Carbide 330R Silent Mid Tower Case - Black (CC-9011024-WW) £69.95
1 x Raijintek Themis Evo Professional CPU Cooler £27.95
Total : £1,509.84 (includes shipping : £12.50).

Thanks very much guys, there may be a bit of OC in the future if i get any say in the matter :p

For now, stock is for certain.

FYI, as far as im aware, for haswell refresh the K series at stock are actually clocked higher at base too.

The Samsung 840 Pro is rated for many more read/write cycles than standard SSDs, the type of NAND used is more durable i believe. So i have chosen it basically for the greater reliability and read/write cycles.

Thanks all for the further replies.

Just as i left work i showed my boss how much it would cost, (baring in mind there is no VAT) and he said "Is that all? Are you sure you dont want to spend a bit more and upgrade it?"

I said probably not, but what do you guys think? We really dont need to upgrade any further i dont think. Maybe could get a titan instead of 780, but it just seems a bit silly, i really cant believe our workload will make any use of it.

Good spot on the hyperX memory Fallen, thanks, will def use that. Sadly i don't trust crucial as far as i can throw them with the failure rate ive had with their drives, we don't need any bigger than 512 anyway. Good call on the PSU, not sure if we need the extra 850w leg room but i might go for it anyway since we may change things in the future.

The choice of Gigabyte motherboard i dont know how i feel about. Personally i have always bought ASUS when i want the rock solid stability, also not too familiar with the gigabyte UEFI. Will have to mull over that a bit, will check some reviews to refresh my memory.

The case is always a tough choice, will also find review on the ethoo pro and see what i think.

Thanks for all the input, if somebody wants to spec something even more expensive then go for it. Maybe we could go 2011? Although for single core performance alone, its not really worth it is it? (unless we had x99 of course)

Well since gigabyte have a UK RMA, i may switch for a gigabyte board.

My only concern with the case is the size. It seems pretty huge considering there will be no watercooling and only one graphics card, a small mid tower might be more appropriate. Maybe ill have to choose between filters and size.

If i can get the budget, might squeeze in a Titan Black as they are just so cool :D

yeah, not gonna go 2011, since it has to be bought now x79 is the only option and it all seems so out of date in comparison to 1150. A Raid 0 SSD array would be pretty sweet so i might consider that. Since this is for business where i work, it is not my personal machine, and i wont even get to use it :( storage and backup is irrelevant as its all handled adequately by the company anyway.

I just noticed that the ethernet chip on this board is Qualcomm rather than Intel. I know they are reputable and good, but does it have any daft gimmiky features that dont work or create overhead?

Yea, i made sure that he was aware in the difference in service procedure. None the less, we can buy replacement parts for next day delivery anyway, and i dont think we have the service plan anyway, only for the main data server. But he said that since we are spending half as much as normal, we can buy twice as often... which i thought was a bit of a funny comment, but im not gonna argue.

Theyve been wasting money on ridiculous dual xeon rigs with high end quadro the last 6 years that are terrible for our work and cost a bucket. It was so irritating, at least now i can show them the light :)
