Safety Camera Threshold

I saw a Safety Camera on the A74M today at about 1400hrs, was doing 83-85 indicated when I saw it from around 350 metres away (didn't see it until I looked up as it was quite a high bridge!). I have previously been done by an LTI 20.20 from close to 1km away so I know that they would have got me at about 83-85 indicated. The speedo over-reads only very slightly in my car so I imagine my speed over land was around 79-81, which according to ACPO is fixed penalty. Has anyone had an NIP for such a low speed on a motorway?

I know my father got one for 47mph in a 40 which I thought was a bit harsh.

Thats not a fixed rule, diff police areas play by diff rules,Powys for one is harsh ( 2mph over in a 30 ,unless they've become more lenient recently )

The oft stated '10% +2' 'rule' comes from the ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers) guidelines - they are only guidelines, as mentioned above different forces choose to obey or ignore them at will!

Seems daft to me, different outcomes/punishments for speeding offences are allowable to my mind, depending on conditions, type of road, traffic, etc, but it seems silly that you can get prosecuted by a force that basically ignores the guidelines set out by most senior police officers in one part of the country yet get off scot free in the another.

Here the speed cameras are considered to be infalible, but that your speedometer could be out by 8% - so that's the error margin you get.

Anyone who's ever seen a staionary car doing 10mph will understand my problem with that.

A quick question from a driver who will soon be facing british speed camers -
What's the deal with signage etc - before or after the camera? Here it's always after ("You've just been through a Radar Speed Camera - Thank you for not speeding"), which seems like a great way to raise money, but not to prevent speeding in black-spots and save lives. I was told that in the UK they're before the camera... have I been misled?

Speed camera signage isn't required, but if it's there it's normally before the speed camera. Mobile speed cameras on the motorway are never signed AFAIK.

They're signed before, but its quite vague. They mean speed cameras are in use in this area, but the camera might be round the corner, or it might be 3 miles down the road, it varies. The sign might also refer to a mobile camera, so it might not be there at all. They are luminous yellow though.

also they put signs in random places where there are no cameras. you will soon learn where these places are :]

I got done for 79 in a 70 on the M6 which is on the "limit". Cost me the fine and £200 extra on my insurance this year!
