I have a clapped out old workstation running as the "server" and a laptops syncing....

I want to move act to another PC totally

its a SQL hosted database i think (acts version of SQL not MSSQL??) is the best way to

1) backup act on the old machine
2) restore act to the new machine

what happends to the laptop, can I jsut now tell it to sync with the new machine??

What version of Act? If it's 2011 onwards it's most likely SQL express. The process is easy to move providing you don't have it integrated with Outlook etc.

It is pretty much as you say, install Act on the new machine (unless you select custom it will install the full version including SQL Express) and create a blank DB and then restore over the top of it. Where you tell Act to store it's files it will have a .pad file which is all you need to run to link to the DB. We normally map a drive for this so it's easily accessible.

its v2009 - there is no outlook integration involved

so will the laptop be happy to sync with the new machine / restored DB (obviously ill have to change the IP its syncing to or give the new machien the same IP as the old one)

you moving to a newer OS? - i.e. Windows 7?

If so I believe you need to install SQL in a certain order for it to work right - I came across this recently at work on a small 3 pc based networked version. Google for it - it's on their forums ;)

hth.

2009 look's like it still SQL as well so it should be simples, replied to your e-mail by the way. :)
