Has anyone here tried to learn sage line 50? A lot of jobs I'd like to apply have a requirement of knowing it, is a home study course a good option? How difficult/time consuming to teach yourself?

Thanks

It's pretty easy. Have you any experience of accounting software, or accounting in general?

I'd just say you are an experienced user and make it up as you go along, to be honest. You can google everything you need as you use it

Sage Line 50 is the easiest of all accountancy software to use and learn to use. So long as you understand the basics of accountancy then a bit of googling and online videos and you should be good to go.

Not sure if they still do it, but sage used to let you download a version with demo software. If you can get that then you can have a play to your heart's content :)

Knowing a bit about how accounting works would be beneficial (credits, debits, double-entry (narf) )

Knowing a bit about how accounting works is pretty crucial when using accounting software I would say :p

I recently spent some time 'teaching' someone how to use Sage, and if she hadn't had 20 years of Payroll experience I wouldn't have even tried.

As it was, I did the first 6 months of accounts while teaching her, then left her to it....returned at the Year End to find the accounts in a complete shambles! It was a nightmare to unpick :(

Yeah knowing debits, credits, double entry, understanding balance sheets and normal accountancy practices is pretty essential before you use Sage. If you know all of that then its easy to pick up :)

It has not been called "Sage Line 50" for many years now, it's just "Sage 50 Accounts". Sage 50 Accounts and Sage 50 Payroll are separate applications.

Yes, you really need some familiarity with basic bookkeeping principles to understand it, but that is nothing you cannot pick up in the space of a few weeks. For the more advanced stuff, Sage does offer pretty good support.

What sort of job role are you looking at? Normally a bookkeeper or accountant would be using Sage and I cannot imagine you'd apply for such jobs without basic experience in those areas?

You can teach yourself most of the core functionality of Sage Accounts with a copy of Instant Accounts, which will be cheaper. They are actually the same application, Sage 50 just has more advanced functionality such as multi company support etc.
