After months of searching I found a decent alternative to the old sailor jerrys ...... ADMIRAL VERNONS - Old J Spiced Rum!

Just got a bottle and its near as dam it the same as the old recipe. just thought I'd give you a heads up cheers!

I'm sure I was once lucky enough to get the original sailor jerry's after the formula change.
I bought another bottle and it didn't taste anywhere near as smooth.

I'll give it a look thanks, at the moment my favourites Morgan Spiced since it's pretty cheap and cheerful at 15 quid a litre.

Recently saw a deal on Bacardi Oakheart 1L at just under 15 quid at morrisons, that was nice.

Fancy trying this, I tend to like rum based things but never had spiced rum - I see the site recommends serving with coke or ginger, any other suggestions?

To those that like it, how do you usually drink it?

Better than the original Sailor Jerrys.

With ice, lime and coke zero or lemonade usually. 1 part rum to 2 parts mixer, crabbies ginger beer is lovely with it too.

Loads here that will work with any spiced rum: http://www.krakenrum.com/recipes

Tried and its a fail, okish but no better than morgan spiced rum IMO.

Old J spiced is the nuts IMO. Passed it on to a few mates and it gets the thumbs up from them.

Old J spiced Rum/coke/ice and lime = perfection

So if the old one is so good, why the hell don't they bring it back?

Who bloody knows. check ebay for old bottles of the stuff they go for stupid money:eek:

New stuff is awful , theres been masive campaigns on FB etc etc but makers must still be selling enough not backtrack:(

Its weird because its almost common knowledge. A mate said the other day that the older one was way better. I never tasted the original though :(

Only thing I can think of is the original recipe was to hard/expensive to make on the scale they required once it became popular:confused:

Any better ideas or facts as to why Id love to know :)

I dont see how it can be, it got popular which means they could have continued to make it and even jacked up the price as well.

Damn shame, but if this new rum is as good as people say, it doesn't matter anymore! =]

Id say its the closest i've got. Very nice not quite the same but arguably better in its own right
