I recently bought this game and I would like to share my thoughts on it and would love for you to share yours too.

This game has been out for a while on the PC and an even longer while on the consoles (for the record, I have not played saints row 1). I totally overlooked it at launch dismissing it as a GTA clone and went on to play GTA 4 instead. I even ignored my Ben "Zahtzee" Croshaw as he lavished praise on it in a particularly uncharacteristic fashion. The only reason I bought it was......It cost £5.

My friend bought it on the direct2drive promotion and couldn't stop talking about it for a week and recommenced I buy it, I ignored him. Then after a few days, I decided I would indeed buy it (heck, what is £5 anyway - 2 beers if you're lucky). But the darn promotion had finished, I eventually got it from game for a hefty £13.50 and was a bit annoyed.

This did not last long.

Let me first say, a GTA clone is exactly what it is. However, this is not a bad thing in the slightest. The fellas at rockstar have created a genre of games that are story driven, full of interesting gameplay features, generally non-lineral and generally a heck of a lot of fun to play. It is completely understandable that games companies want to emulate this formula, and the gents at Volition seem to have hit the nail square on the head. They have taken all the fun stuff that GTA has: sandbox gameplay, massive maps, great story/voice acting, vehicles of all shapes and sizes, good music and turned it into a game you enjoy and want to tell your friends about.

Let me just list some of the people from the voice cast, the male cockney player charcter (the one I chose) is voiced by Charles Shaughnessy (most famous for his role in "The Nanny" but has recently appeared in the fantastic "Mad Men") this PC is hilarious and would highly recommend trying the game playing with him as your ingame voice, next Daniel Dae Kim (Lost, Angel, Star Trek) plays your most trusted gang lieutenant, Eliza Dushku (Buffy, Angel, Dollhouse) plays another key gang lieutenant and Michael Dorn (He is Mr Worf, that is all you need to know) as an enemy leader with a lot of presence. Among many many other (go NPH!) these fine actors make the game believable and fantastically fun to play.

One thing I constantly though while playing through it was how much better it is than GTA4 to play. This is mainly because GTA4 removed so much good stuff that is included in Saints Row 2, things like: Planes, tanks, property, neighbourhood warfare as well as many of the over-the-top silly things that made previous GTA games so fun to play. I still reckon GTA:San Andreas is a touch better than saints row (come on, its got Samuel L Jackson and James Woods in it!), but its a close call - Saints Row 2 certainly looks nicer and comes with fun co-op and multiplay modes.

All in all, I found this game surprisingly fun to play and as you may have guessed, would recommend anyone to give it a try. I bought it on the PC (using the rig in my sig) but I'm sure it will play very well on the consoles too.

What does everyone else think?

I have it for the 360 and it's great. I especially loved the Destruction Derbys and 'Insurance' missions where you have to throw yourself infront of cars. :D

Didn't enjoy it as much as GTA IV but some of the aspects of it are better.

This game got a lot of flak for being a bad port, but really I enjoyed it a lot.
Fun, does not not take itself serious at all. It ran for me at about 30 fps and thats fine for me.

Not played it but...

I just bought it and Bioshock for a fiver each in the promotion you mentioned. Downloading now. Pondering a couple of others.

Read somewhere that you can buy from the US site for five of their dollars. I didn't just in case it caused complications afterwards.

I put off buying this due to all the negative comments but now wish I'd bought it sooner!

Yes in terms of performance it doesn't look as nice as GTA SA or IV and the graphics engine is not best optimised. However the game itself is a complete blast, interesting campaigns, plenty of side missions (albeit some on the hard side). Most of all a fully customisable protagonist not constantly looking at his navel like Niko in GTA IV or the at times oppressive rap/ethnic cultures from GTA SA.

SR2 doesn't take itself too seriously, I love the blatant mickey take quite early on of the GTA SA Caligula Casino heist.

Overall I would probably say GTA SA has the edge but to anyone who hasn't yet played SR2 I would definitely recommend it.

Yup, I really enjoyed this on the 360. It had everything GTA 4 didn't, and was all the better for it IMO.

The insurance fraud side game was probably one of my favourite parts, and the fact you can chuck random people off the tops of buildings was rather fun too. :D

One of my favourite 360 titles. I seldom ever complete a game on the 360, but there was no way I was to let this one remain unfinished.

Actually got this on 360 to begin with and loved it. Ended up buying it again on PC to play through the coop with a friend. Its full, no limits coop which is immense fun in an open city sandbox game. Sure it ran a bit rubbish on both our pc's compared to the xbox version but the laughs were worth it :)

My machine is practically ancient now, and I loved SR2. It certainly doesn't run as well as it should, but it's not gamebreaking.

I thought it as pretty bad:

Driving is not fun, handling is a bit rubbish.
Draw distance ( it & graphics are bad.)
Performance is bad for what you get.
Sound quality is appalling, sounds like I'm listening to 64 kbit mp3's. Makes my ears bleed to hear some (actually quite nice) songs in such appalling quality. Tire screeching sounds crap too. Perhaps if you have rubbish TV speakers or cheapo 5€ speakers, it doesn't matter to you, but if you have good 5.1 or stuff like Sennheiser headphones, the sound is VERY VERY irritating and actually ruins the experience of the game.
No 16:9 support until 1.2 patch...

Imo, GTA SA is far far far better...
Though, some of the game modes are indeed fun, like causing as much financial damage as possible or the poo mission, etc... The customization (I created a woman main char that runs around in her undies :D) is great too.

Very unpolished game though :(. Lacks the easter eggs and fun things GTA SA does have. Small uninteresting world too.

I played the original SR on the 360 but never completed it.

I'm in two minds whether to give SR2 a go on the PC but for every positive comment on it I keep reading the complete opposite from someone who slates the game badly.

/ponders a bit :D

Got SR2 PC when it was £5, simply cant play it thanks to the load in stutter, makes driving a real chore. Running around seems fine, and the frame rate is acceptable, its just the load in stutter that totally kills it for me :(. Mouse aim and controls work well, but every single menu has to be controlled with the keyboard when you should be able to simply click on things with the mouse, which you cant. A little more work and this port could have been a whole lot better.

Not that far into SR2 yet but it doesnt seem great. The game clearly has some good ideas but it feels so shoddy, Ive played game & watch lcd games with more convincing vehicle physics. Will keep going for now but it really is hard to get past the awful feel of the controls both on foot and in vehicles :(.

With you on that, uninstalling as we speak. I can see how the game could be fun but I just cannot get past horrible the feel of the engine.
