Hi, just a general enquiry as to what is a reasonable salary to be earning before considering moving away from home?

I probably won't do this myself for a year or two but it would be interesting what people think it would be OK to live on.

On 18k and seem to manage if not paying out for vehicle repairs. People that house share in which case its much cheaper.

Depends on any financial commitments you already have, transport costs, cost of living in your local area. There are loads of factors. I could move out and survive on 12kpa in Newcastle if I had no debt and used public transport but it wouldn't be the life of a King I'd be leading.

You could easily manage on £16k after tax so long as your rent is around £500.

The more the better though obviously, even better if you live with a partner.

I manage on £15k BEFORE tax living alone with a mortgage. Depends on what your lifestyle is and how you manage your money.

I'm only on 11k before tax atm but it's a job I hope to improve on very soon. I'm only in it because there is nothing else in the area.

I really want to move out but I have a head on my shoulders so understand that I am in no position to do as such. It could be a few years before I can seriously think of it.

Theres far too many variables to say for sure. It'll be higher if you have dependents, need to run a car or live in London or its commuter belt; less if you can share with friends, etc.

Personally, I did it as soon as possible just to be in my own space.

Depends entirely on how much you need to move and where you're based.

Correct. The OP asked a "How long is a piece of string?" question.

Enough to pay rent (or the shared rent), essential bills and enough left to have a little fun.

In a shared house round here in Derby I'd say around 12k. YMMV.

I think we had one of these "what's a decent wage to live on". Ultimately it comes down to what you think is a good wage.

I know someone that lives happily on £6000 a year more or less.

I'm moving out on my own now, without sharing with anyone. And it's going to cost me around £1k pcm, central Manchester, probably including all bills and food etc.

I'm on £15k living with 3 friends in a rented house in a nice area. I'm paying £260 a month rent and after all my bills, food etc usually end up with about £350-400 a month in spare cash.
