I’m looking at applying for a job with quite a wide salary range ( 59k to 92,500k)

There’s a follow up questionnaire after the initial application asking about salary expectations.

How much of an uplift would you put from current salary?

I’m thinking around 10% increase from current package and could comfortably justify that, would you ask for more?
 
I’d go +20% tbh. Can always go down. But I wouldn’t move unless it was close to 20%.

I would agree - Is it worth moving jobs for 10% salary increase.

Yes there can be many factors to a job move - but I think 20% would be the minimum I would consider
 
If it's the same job as your current one, then 15-20% seems fair.

Where it sucks is if you're changing role, and then anything from +50% to +100% might be fair depending on the circumstances but recruiters / hiring managers have a habit of pushing down the "what do you currently earn" avenue.

Agreed the salary range is massive and a slight worry.

I’ll put a figure in that’s 20% and see where we go.

By the way, 59,000 to 92,500,000 is a HUGE pay range! :eek:
If it’s civil service or related that’s probably the entire pay scale. You won’t actually be able to get that top amount. They’ll have a “recruitment zone” of the first four bands / points or so.

20% would be reasonable - but if you're well within the range and can put forth arguments to justify it, then I don't see an issue with say 25% or 30%, etc.

I think 10% is too low, unless you're keen to get the job for other reasons and are near the top of their range.

I'd put 92,500K in the box every time. Why wouldn't you? Serious question.

I would too if I thought I could justify it. Hiring managers just want the best person; you're never going to hire someone just because they are a bit cheaper if you have the budget.
 
You talk about % uplift from current salary but for me that's a secondary factor, I'd be seeing how I compare with the job spec and if I tick most of the boxes, I'd go in slightly below their top budget. Ask for 50% uplift if that's what you deserve.

Obviously to be worthwhile you'll likely want a reasonable uplift but I would assume you wouldn't be applying if this role would mean taking a pay cut.

I mean you talk about asking for 10% uplift but if you are starting from £55k that's rubbish, if you are starting from £80k that's ok. Your current salary has no bearing on your ability to do a different job - people try to use it as a sort of barometer for experience, complexity of the current job etc but the reality is if someone doubles their salary they don't suddenly become twice as good overnight.
 
It depends as well on the overall package (pension contributions mainly). Big difference if between a statutory minimum one and like 15%. But also as said above I think it more matters about how you align to the job role than what you currently get paid- otherwise that's how underpaid people stay underpaid when moving between roles.
