If so, what do you think of the place, I get the impression that Salford is actually a **** hole but what about the uni?

Thanks.

I did my MPhys there, the university itself is not that bad, although the area around it can be a bit rough! I used to live in the middle of Weaste so I lived right in the middle.

It's not a patch on King's College London which is where I am now for my PhD ;)

Any more questions then feel free to ask, I spent 4 years there!

My best mate study english lit there, I went up to see him a few times.

Salfords biggest advantage is its so close to Manchester city centre but its easier to get in to than the other 2 unis in the area! Couldnt comment on the uni itself but the 3 halls of residense I saw were a complete dive. Probably the worst out of all the unis I've been to. The one thing I will say though is the halls are fairly secure; fenced all the way around with electonic access control and 24x7 security guards.

That said everyone I met up there was very friendly.

I'm staying in Manchester city center, right near Cheetham hill, hoping it's not far to walk to Salford Uni, I've never being to the uni before at all.

Secure from people outside the university, however not from those inside. My house was featured on the front page of the university paper because one of the guys went nuts one night while we were sleeping and put knives facing upwards in the stairs and stabbed all our doors.

Being close to Manchester does definitely have its advantages - especially if you like music, Manchester academy always has good bands on!

Edit: Best way to get to the university from there is to go down to Salford station, and then follow that road around, you will come to a park on your right hand side, and then the university is a short walk from there. IIRC the main building has a large image of the university crest on the front (in green).

I should be going to the business school part of it.

I hope I get on with people cause I hate nothing more than going to a new place and ending up in between lectures being on my own like a lemon.

Do you like Asians? :D

Cheetham Hill is dog and not very close to the Uni :p

I've been in and out of Salford all of my life, go uni there atm. The Uni's great, although our SU bar got shut so um, no SU :p

Don't walk through Peel Park when its dark :p

I went to Salford for 3 years! Nowt wrong with it haha!

I stayed in Castle Irwell which was the biggest of their student accomo's, yes it wasn't the Ritz but it wasn't exactly a hole either. Not sure what happened after I left but I seem to remember they'd knocked down one complete side of it.

Not sure if The Pav is still there, but that was the main SU bar/club thingy.

Cheetham isn't really that near the Uni to be honest, probs a 45 minutes or so walk depending on where in Cheetham Hill you are and you can get ****** if you think I'd walk around there at night!
The immediate area directly around the Uni looks pretty ghetto, but it actually isn't that bad, in my 3 years there I never felt unsafe walking around day or night (well maybe once or twice in the dead of the night), but like has been said Castle Irwell is completely fenced off and safe.

Would love to go back to Uni!

Can't believe they knocked down our old house! HOUSE 12 CREW!

They have been trying to knock down the whole lot for years. It's a messy, messy place as you will know :D

Sorry for the hijack bro

Just got my timetable, I'm in everyday O_o

Where as last year i was in 2 days.

Oh crikey, this brings back memories, I went to salford uni, about 15 years ago, spent a year in castle irwell, with a bunch of wastrels that would rather pour beer into a funnel until they puked. Was fortunate and spent my last year there in (bramall court) which was much better, except that day when the IRA decided to blow things up, that got a bit wierd.

Back when I was there, the most powerful computers they had, were 486's in the maths department, and honestly, there was little of appeal.

That said, I have a friend there now, and she tells me its great, so it must have gotten better over the years.

Have they put up any new accomodation to replace it besides that complex on Seaford Road?

Nope xD

The iQ on Seaford is still bang tush though. About £100 a week.

Brammall just got bought by CLV (sigh) so thats getting renovated.
