Paraguay striker Salvador Cabanas is in intensive care after he was shot in the head in a bar in Mexico last night.
Cabanas, who was linked with a move to Sunderland a few weeks ago, is in intensive care after he was the victim of an attempted robbery at a bar in Mexico City.
The 29-year-old striker is now battling for his life after two suspects were arrested for attempted murder.
The CF America Mexico striker had scored 18 goals in 24 matches this season and Sunderland manager Steve Bruce admitted he was tracking the striker.
Earlier this month Sunderland boss Steve Bruce said: "I've monitored Cabanas. You know I've had a little contact in South America. Cabanas is a fantastic player, whether it's possible, I'm not quite sure. He's somebody who would be of interest but I'm sure if he became available, there'd be lots more interest too."
