Does anyone know where I can find a guide to installing and running Samba on a Ubuntu installation to get access to my NTFS partition?
 
Sounds like you're getting slightly mixed up- samba is used for accessing Windows shares from Windows and sharing directories from Linux so that Windows machines can see them.

If you're wanting to access the files on the ntfs partition of your local disk have a gander at:
