So it's looking like my hunt for more FPS in CSGO has hit a roadblock - the CPU.

Upgrading from a 750Ti to a R9 290 hasn't yielded the FPS jump I expected, and given that a friend with a better cpu (4770k iirc) gets almost double the frame rate I do, I think it's time to admit defeat on the CPU front.

My first instinct is a 2600k, but given that the motherboard I have is no good for overclocking, am I likely to find something cheaper that'll do the job just as well? The PC is a Dell Vostro, basic office PC!

I'm looking for cheap here, ideally! This is supposed to be a budget gaming rig :P

Is your friends system overclocked? I'm assuming it must be to nearly double your performance else there's something wrong with your setup.

i5 to i7 is going to be a very minor upgrade in terms of gaming, I would try to get a second hand unlocked i5 and Z series motherboard to accompany it. Otherwise it's probably not going to be worth upgrading with your current motherboard.

I doubt a 2600 would make much difference, are there no turbo boost options at all in your bios.
A board and cpu would be the best option imo.
