Same old HIS X1950 Problems...

Okay so i bought a new HIS 512Mb X1950 (AGP) graphics card for my system because i couldn't really afford a whole new system.

Anyway my first one came and i had lots of black screen crashes and couldn't really use the PC. So i took the step to buy a new PSU and i chose the Jeantech 700W Storm from PC World. Installed it all perfectly but didn't make a difference to the cards crashes.

So i RMA-ed the card for £7.40 :( and waited for the return. I got the return a few days ago and installed etc, still got the same god damn crashes. So i took some advice from a guy on a other forum and bought the Thermaltech Purepower Express 250w, just installed it. Same goddamn crashes.

Whats going on? I have done everything now to try fix it, have i just been unlucky and got another broken card? Should i send it back for another £7.40? The price of this card has gone well over £200 now and im just going crazy because i haven't played a game for about a month :(

Any ideas?

Thanks for reading

Martin

I had the black screen of death, it was nothing to do with the power supply, doesn't sound like it with you either.

RMA the card again, explain the issue and hopefully you'll get another one back, if you explain how it's your second then they may prioritize you. You should also get the Delivery money back up to a tenner I believe.

Unlucky, id RMA it and get a refund or get a different brand, the HIS cards are atrocious at the minute, theres loads of faulty HIS AGP x1950's now, HIS have definately gone down in my book, they used to be quality, but these AGP x1950pro's have really let them down, if its not rattly fans, its buggered power connectors on the cards, black screens etc... the list goes on. :(

Id remove the competitor to btw. ;)

Yeah they are bad the HIS cards at the moment, id RMA it for a different brand, you've had 2x already, sounds like you'll have a 360 on yer hands if you keep getting replacements. :D

Okay well you can give me some advice then :)

Should i stick out with my old system, its not a bad system really but its AGP which limits me with the new upgrades or should i buy a new one?

I sorta wanted to wait out till PCI-E 2.0 and the ATI Rx00's and i guess thats still possible, whens the release date for the new ATI stuff? I have a budget of about £600 but im going to uni in September so i need a system to get me through uni and through some of the games thrown at me during those 3 years without too much upgrading (gonna be v. poor). Im doing a computer games design course aswell, so defo needs a lot of memory and gaming power.

Anyone got any specs for me with hardware etc to put together a decent system within my price range. I guess the price range could be stretched for a graphics card if its worth it :) It would pretty much be the full deal, dont need monitor though or any external stuff. I can recycle the PSU's and im also partial to ATI and AMD, not keen on Nvidia or Intel.

Current System
AMD Sempron 64 3000+
1Gb RAM
Asus K8v-Mx Mobo
1 dead graphics card
700w PSU and Thermaltake Power Express

Oh, it needs a sweet case too ;)
