Samsung 870 EVO any problems known

Resurrecting this thread since my 1TB 870 EVO just approached death, date of production 10-07-2021 (as in 10th July 2021), at this date it has ECC Error Rate = 4625, with barely 8200 GB (TBW) and 5000 hours, maybe more units are affected than just the first half of 2021. That's sad, I used my warranty to get a new one, hopefully the new ones don't have any problems

Edit: date
did you update the firmware?

did you update the firmware?
No, I didn't bother since I've assumed that it must be some sort of mechanical failure and it would be my first time updating firmware of an SSD.

I discovered it through Steam game files validating infinitely, so at first I naively tried to fix it with chkdsk /r which fixed some things with games and minor file issues, but it didn't finish the chkdsk /r, at phase 5 I got error 766f6c756d652e63 470, which apparently should've bricked my drive completely and 've left it at RAW (it didn't). So I just filed an RMA immediately and cloned the whole drive to an old 1TB HDD. Now waiting for a replacement drive, I think that I will update the firmware of the new one once I get it tho (and hoping that the old hdd will not fail me in the meantime)

Edit: minor corrections
Edit2: It would have been way nicer if Samsung just notified everyone of the malfunctioning and gave us guidelines to like update the firmware or something

My first 4TB had ECC errors SMART failure within weeks, caused files to become corrupted. Had a super fast RMA replacement from Samsung (Netherlands) which has been rock solid since. Drive gets a hammering too :)

I just ordered a 4TB model. Let's see how it lasts. SFAIK the problems should be resolved by a new firmware, similar to the 980pro and 990pro. If anyone is running any of these models make sure you use magician to update your firmware ASAP.

I've seen Samsung acknowledge the issues with the 980 Pro and 990, but I haven't seen the 870 Evo talked about anywhere (the drive life didn't drop like they did either) and I haven't seen any confirmation that the firmware update addresses their problems (except anecdotal reports that bad blocks and ECC errors stopped going up). On the plus side, you'll know very quickly (within 5-10TB) that there's a problem and if there's not, the drives seem to stay fine.

That's good to know. I'll dump some FLAC files onto it and leave it a month or so before putting anything important on it. I mainly got it as a photo store for stuff I'm not editing.

Edit, hang on did you mean TB or GB? I'm not sure how quickly I would accumulate 5TB of writes.

hi Kulei,
how did you manage to clone your 870 to a HDD ? what is a system OS drive or just an data drive ?
I tried to clone my 870 EVO to a 870 QVO and it failed ! i tried samsung migrated (fail), clonezilla (fail too), acronis (failed too). I'm out of solution to clone my system 870 EVO before to send it to RMA ...
any advice ?

fyi Macrium Reflect FREE Edition has been reliable for general cloaning dutys for me.

did this software ever detect your SSD problem sector and offer you to ignore it or it did not detect them at all ?
It just works with what you have, if the OS can't snapshot and copy to new disk your best bet is to copy files individually (to usb disk etc) and start again...

can i ask what a failing lba is on these drives as i have just had a rma returned with this and they say its fine

Were you still getting the ECC uncorrectables, bad blocks and reserved blocks being used?

Did you format the drive prior to RMA?

it got cloned using AOMEI Partition Assistant, it clones it literally 1:1 so your OS will normally boot from the new drive, then after getting the RMA you can just clone it back. I also ran chkdsk /r in cmd using administrator privileges on the spare drive (after first cloning) to fix the errors, but as someone above mentioned you can also try updating the firmware, maybe that will do the charm

No bad block reported and I only deleted all files off the drive

If you don't have bad blocks 'n stuff then I don't really know what the failure message means, because the failing drives have that message AND the bad smart data. If your drive doesn't have any bad smart data, it doesn't mean that it is 100% fine, but it does mean that any problem you're having is not the same issue as reported in this thread. You will almost definitely have errors being reported before 10TB written, usually before 5TB.

The reason I asked if you formatted it is because formatting can stop bad blocks and errors being reported, though I believe the smart data doesn't change regardless of the drive being formatted or erased. So, if you delete everything from the drive, this might be a problem (for their fault testing to be successful), since you wouldn't have any uhm, "actively damaged" data, but I'd assume that their testing would be more thorough than this and at least include checking smart for historical errors (except, from what you have said, your drive doesn't report anything is wrong).

formatted in Linux as i was testing it in that, then added back into windows and then did a full scan with magician with no lba failure reported

The difference is Samsung acknowledged issues with those SKUs and confirmed the newest firmware fixes it, no such acknowledge of the 870 EVO, there is some people on the latest 870 EVO firmware with broken SSDs.

helo guys of 870 evo users,
did one of you record the full process in a video to update the firmware in Samsung magicien ? is it take long ? 1min ? more ? i can't find any video of the process... (by video, i mean official & dedicated to this model only)
