Hello, .

So I purchased a Samsung 980 pro SSD 1TB with a production date of June 2023.

Now obviously I've heard that these drives were prone to failure and was wondering if drives made around this time have updated firmware out of the box?

Im actually using this as ps5 storage and can't check the firmware version due to having no computer with an SSD drive.

Any info on this?

I bought one last year around that time and it had the latest firmware on it, don't think there been any newer firmware for it.

Based on the date of the articles published about the firmware issue online, I would expect it to have been updated already.

Do you know anyone with a computer that could take NVME drives?

Just to let you know, do not try to update using a USB enclosure. Samsung Magician dos not recognise what drive it is and will not do the update. (i have tried)

Going by this reddit thread, it has to be a Thunderbolt enclosure.

You may have to format drive to work on a PC, so you will lose any data saved on your drive.

EDIT

Maybe a PC repair shop could do the update for you.

So seeing as I can't check the firmware version would you guys say im safe with this drive manufactured in 2023?
I don't want to promise you anything, all I can say is that if you do a google search for the firmware issues the articles are dated before your drive was manufactured, so I think it is a fair assumption Samsung would have updated the firmware.
