Hi all,

Bought a Samsung 2TB 990 Pro m.2 Drive to upgrade my 1TB 980 (Non-pro)

Specifications

AMD Ryzen 5800x @ 4.6Ghz, Undervolted
X570 Aorus Elite Motherboard
32Gb 3600 DDR4 CL18 Ram
Gigabyte Nvidia 1080ti Graphics Card
Samsung 980 M.2 (Being replaced)
Corsair HX1000i PSU

- I installed it in the secondary slot, picked it up in the BIOS and booted to Windows on my previous drive. It was listed in Device Manager, then disappeared.
- I swapped the drives around, exactly the same behaviour.
- I ripped out all of the drives, reset BIOS defaults and installed the 990Pro on it's own. Tried to installed Windows 11, I partition the drive click next - then Windows install fails at 6-15% each time. Tried Windows 10 and the same.
- I put the drive in another machine, PCI-E 3.0, works perfectly as a main or secondary drive. Updated the Firmware via the Samsung software. Still the same in my main rig.

What I do notice is when the 990Pro is in, the HD LED blinks so much quicker. I notice when the installer is about to fail as the blinking stops 6-10% in - no more blinking, like it's being disabled.

Is this just one of those compatibility issues? I've gone through almost every setting in the BIOS hoping to find something. Put my 1TB 980 (Non-pro) in and running perfect.

Help...!

I thought i'd bought a fake 990 as I was trying to clone using an external usb thingy and Magician wasn't recognising it. Fixed when connected direct to MB.

Just seen youve confirmed genuine with the firmware update. Does sound odd though

The 990 Pro is on the QVL list for the X570 Aorus Elite so it shouldn't be a compatibility issue.

I'd try resetting BIOS settings to default, dont undervolt or enable XMP. Run the RAM at it's stock speed 2666 or whatever it is and then try installing windows.

Tried BIOS defaults, turned off XMP, overvolted RAM - Still the same. Going to have to send this back!

OK small update.

I just purchased a 5600x CPU to test.

In short. It solved the problem. With the 5600x I am able to run the 990Pro at full speed without any issues! I've had to switch out a spare graphics card as well to play COD. The 1080Ti is coming up with DirectX issues. I'm starting to this it's the board?
I switched back to the 5800x and within 2 minutes Windows crashed and no further read/writes on the 990Pro.

I've swapped the 5800x over to another B450 board and it's working with the 990Pro, but at PCI-E 3.0 Speeds. I'm at a loss!

It sounds like it could be a bad CPU to me. Have you tried cleaning the CPU pads (not the motherboard socket) with alcohol and wiping them clean? You could try spraying a little alcohol into the CPU socket on the motherboard too, but let it air dry and don't touch any of the pins.
