Samsung Data Migration Snag

I just used the Samsung Data Migration software to move my SSD boot win 8.1 boot drive to a new, bigger Samsung 840 Evo disk.

Everything went ok as I made sure to stop comodo antivirus and kill all non-essential processes and when the process completed I shut down, unplugged my old drive and booted up successfully with my new 840 SSD.

Everything is working great, BUT if I plug the old drive back in then it seems a lot of stuff starts pointing to the old drive, such as windows update, set time automatically, etc., but windows defender, explorer, etc. all point to the correct new drive. The error I get is:

My google-fu is not managing to find anything or anywhere to seek help. Only option I can see is to try renaming, zipping or nuking the folders on the old SSD, but since I'd like to keep it for both backup bootup drive and also to install development tools and compilers on I'd prefer to figure out what is causing it to point to the old drive.

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

ive not comes across this.

what might be a idea to do is disconnect new ssd, connect back up the original drive and then make a image of it using the windows 7\8 backup and restore software and then restore this image to your new SSD.

failing that you could use this below, will give you a guide on how to use another bit of software

I did have a quick look but couldn't find anything either.

Thanks for the link and suggestion, but I think I have solved it by renaming the windows folder on the old drive. When I rebooted everything (e.g. windows update) works and points to the new c: drive.

I did want to rename the old f:\users folder too, but it doesn't allow that (i.e. nothing happens when I do rename). I would think that has something to do with the symbolic links.

So everything works as expected and is looking good, but if there is something I should/could test then by all means let me know.

Note: The Samsung Migration software seems to work really well, but do make sure that you unplug the old drive before restarting or the drive letters will be messed up and you will have a hard time fixing it or have to start over. Make sure you stop every non-essential process, and especially antivirus and such for greatest chance of success.

I think that is what has caused the issue, having more than 1 HDD\SSD connected while cloning was done.

glad its sorted but if you ever wanted to toot back off that drive remember to rename the windows folder :)
