Samsung Laptops... a good choice?

Well, I'm in the market for a new laptop. My current computer is a PC, which is... aged. At six years old, the bog-standard Philips MT2800 has served surprisingly well.

At the mo, I haven't the cash for the custom PC I want, so... laptop as a stop-gap measure.

I've got my eye on a Samsung NP550P5C, as it is within my price range and fits my spec requirements. I've seen Elevon's thread about when he got his, and it looks good. However, I have heard a few (possibly unsubstantiated) grumblings about reliability and build quality.

Is there any basis to the warnings/grumbles, or is a Samsung laptop a good choice?

Samsung reliability and build quality issues? No. Sorry lol, just don't believe it.

I have the NP550P5C-A02UK, before that an NC10, and they're almost flawless. I'm yet to criticise the NP550P5C tbh, especially now I've stuck an SSD in it and moved the HDD to the optical bay in an adapter. Incredibly happy with it. :)

Quick question for you, Muel, or anyone who can answer for that matter.

What does the 5-digit code after the dash mean? I'm guessing it's a code for a specific model, and that the "UK" means it's a UK model, but I'm unsure.

The "UK" means it's a "UK" one, but the other bit, A02, A03 etc is a hardware revision I think.

I went for the A02 because it's cheap at the moment, and has on-board graphics. (Saves electricity), whereas the A03 comes with a GT630M (I think), so much better for gamings.

Thanks again for the input.

mranderson, it's not really going to be a business laptop, more of an alrounder, so a few games, some CAD software, Photoshop, my drawing programs, programming editors, as well as stuff like MS Office and the like.

I buy/sell fix and deal with laptops day in and day out. I own a samsung personally, does that answer your question? :p

Not had any issues with my Samsung Gamer 7 as someone mentioned above, my only possible criticism of it (not checked to see if its true tho) is that apparently the graphics port on it is slightly tweaked making it hard to upgrade with standard MXM cards.

Build quality is good - doesn't quite have the solid feel of some professional laptops but no problems with it.

Well, I ordered myself an NP550 this morning, should turn up tomorrow... Biggest birthday present I've ever bought myself, and it will (in theory) arrive on my birthday too :D .

Possibly dopey question, though: is the NP550P5C considered a notebook or a laptop? I keep seeing it listed differently on different sites.
