I`ve never owned a laptop or a netbook before.
I`m thinking about buying a samsung NC10 or a NC20...not really worried about playing the latest games, but would these netbooks be able to play the following games?
COD2
Medieval II Total War
Doom 3

If not a laptop...budget £500

Thanks

In short no.

Cod2 will work but you need to use something like 3danalyze to enable emulated TnL, thus frame rates will suck big time.
Medieval II Total War will not run.
Doom 3 will certainly run on the NC10 at least, playable? I highly doubt it.

That a side the NC20 is better, better res, bigger keyboard, faster nano chip, supports 64-bit, will be upgradeable to 4gb when single 4gb modules are affordable. However it isn't *as* mobile also the chrome on board gfx are marginally worse than the NC10's GMA.

Edit: £500 will buy you a 13.3" lappy like the dell xps1330 with a proper core2duo and nvidia gfx which will play all them and more.

Strangly i was looking at both these this morning, the NC 20 really appealed to me as a portable laptop for doing work and so on, but they both really arn't well suited for gaming. The NC10 has the poor GMA 945 as a graphics chip that can't do some basic graphics work (cant remember what off the top of my head) and the NC20 only has a via nano cpu which is too slow (like the intel atom) to run medieval 2 or doom 3 (well i wouldnt really want to try it).

As for a laptop sub £500 something like http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=LT-067-SA&groupid=959&catid=1072&subcat= or a dell might do (though im not 100% up on what sort of graphics chips you can get in laptops these days)

no 3D games will run on the Samsung Notebooks. If they do run it will be non-playable!

You can run older 2D games like Theme Part etc.
Thats not true, some games scale down far better.

I have fear working fine on my AAO which is identical spec to the NC10, people can even get halflife 2 playable with a bit of tweaking.

Sounds like you'd be surprised with what you can run at 30+fps: http://www.aspireoneuser.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=2201

Trust me , look for nothing less than a 9400m gt - I have this in my macbook, and its not the best, but certainly plays games like battlefield 2 and stuff ok.

If I was you though - I would look out for a 9600m gt or 8600m gt - not a lot of difference really, and you would get a massive jump in performance for games - look for a m1530 :)
