Hi,

Just got a new phone - Samsung P300 so I thought I would do a review. This is the first review I have done so please be gentle!! :p

Initial thoughts:

My first thought about this phone is that the marketing is damaging to this product. When I went into O2 I saw the posters in the window and thought - nah its a travel clock. So I set about looking at other phones. It was only after the sales person advised me he had a new samsung in that I had a chance to look at one. If he had not I would not even have considered it.

Look and Feel:

When I first saw the phone I instantly fell in love with its clean smart look. I did not even connect it to the phone in the posters. This is a true credit card phone. At only about 8cms long, 5cms wide and less than 1cm deep it balances a small size with the feeling of a solid build. It is a good size weight but the only negative aspect is that some might find it too wide to fit comforably in their hand.

Features:

The phone has all the standard modern features:

Platform
- Tri-band (GSM 900 + 1800 + 1900 MHz)
- GPRS Class 10 (2 Upload, 4 Download)

Camera
- 1.3 Megapixel (1280x1024)

Video
- Video Player / Recorder (MPEG4, H.263)
- Video messaging

Entertainment & Personalization
- Music Player (MP3/ACC/ACC+/e-ACC)
- 64 polyphonic ringtones
- Embedded JAVA™ games

Messaging
- SMS, MMS
- Email client (POP3/SMTP/IMAP4)
- vCard, vCalendar

Connectivity
- Bluetooth®-technology
- WAP 2.0
- Sync ML
- USB

Memory
- 80 MB user memory
- 200 SMS
- 1,000 phone book entries

Ultimately this phone is going to be used as a phone so I was not bothered by the lack of mini-pc features.

Using the phone:

When using the phone it feels solid and robust. The buttons are well spaced out and feel positive when using them. Whilst making phones calls it can feel a little unusual due to its additional width but I know that it will feel more than comfortable once I use it frequently.

Additional extras:

One of my main concerns with this phone was that the stainless steel outer would get scratched. Thankfully Samsung include a very stylish leather case for the phone. Once it is in its case it looks just like a wallet - there is a small hole for the camera lens to look out of. Not only is this a very practical and stylish outer but it also contains a battery to provide that extra amount of power.

The additional software that comes with it has some nice touches and it easy enought to use.

Overall View:

This is a fantastic phone for those who want a phone. It does not have the latest office type features nor does it contain a radio. I am still to see if it will last the test of time but so far it is looking good. Memory is a little small and there does not appear to be a way of increasing the memory. This limits the phone to roughly one album which could be an issue for some.

Holy thread resurection etc. but just a couple of questions,
- I've heard that the ringtone volume is stupidly quiet, have you noticed this at all?
- and also can you have it vibrate and ring at the same time?
- and have you noticed any problems with defauly selection of T9 in text messages?

cheers

This is the one that looks like a calculator is it not?

Lol it's very annoying =) i ve got exactly the same one.... everyone keep saying ohh it looks like a calculator :)

I does looks like one i agree but it is a very nice and stylish phone endeed :D

Had mine since August and i still like it which is quite unusual for me.

Like Bar said, it's a good phone as long as you only want a phone. The camera is 1.3mgp but with such a small screen it's not much use unless you move the images over or just want a wallpaper.

Essentially it's a D500 squeezed into a tiny case and given a nice finish. The brushed steel has picked up a few tiny scratches from when i've not used the leather case but nothing serious considering i've had it 3 months now.

The phone looking like a calculator isn't an issue for me - i actually love the look of the phone, but it is a phone that you either love or hate.

I bought it as i use an XDA IIi (no fun taking that down the pub) and the Samsung is so small you don't even notice it's there for when i carry both.

To answer your questions, Yes, No and No.

It's very difficult to hear the phone ringing, especially when it's in the case, and you really need to use the supplied case for battery life. For that very reason I've stopped using mine as I was fed up with missing calls. It's also surprisingly heavy for the size of it.
