The laptop will be fine, and the heatsink will handle it no problem. Plus make sure you use decent thermal paste and you can undervolt if it does run a little hot.

The hardest part is probably getting to the CPU. If the R70 is anything like the samsungs I have owned in the past I had to take the whole laptop apart to get to it

Thanks for the reply, i have some Artic Silver II, don't mind taking it to bits i'll have to find a manual me thinks, i was also just wondering if the Bios supports the cpu? undervolt what program can i use for that?

Cheers

Samsung arent very forthcoming with service manuals so you will have to scour the net. Just check the bottom first though as you might be lucky and have a hatch over the cpu.

A quick google search shows samsung produced a model r70 with 7500 so if you update to latest BIOS you should be fine.

I use RMclock to undervolt, I get my current C2D P8600 from 1.15v to 1v whichj knocks about 5-10c off my temps and increases my battery life

I have the last bios installed, thanks for the RMclock info will look into it, might even see a performance increase using it hopefully.

It depends on what you are using the laptop for. If video encoding, gaming etc yes you might notice a little difference.
If its just we browsing, office watching movies then your 1.8 is more than adequate.

I did warn you about the service manual, Samsung are g1ts and do not like giving this info out (unlike dell or HP who always give a detailed service manual)

Another option is to try setfsb to overclock your cpu. You will need to know your PLL or you can just try a few at random.

Well its not really a gaming lappy, but i do use it for converting movies etc every know and then, as T7100 has 2mb of cache and the T7500 has 4mb which will help + 400mhz on clock speed.
I'm not to bothered about the manual tbh i've done a few different lappys but i couldn't resist the upgrade for £36. will post back after it arrives and i get it fitted.

Cheers

Well Ninja, Did you get it fitted OK?
I am thinking of doing the same thing....

Thanks Ninja, ... I have a T5500 processor in my (the wife's) R70 and am thinking of upgrading a bit as she is talking about wanting a new machine and I am trying to delay buying her one till new laptops with SSD's are the norm.
Thanks for the photographs, my next question... is there an easy way into the CPU or is it just screws to take the bottom panel off?
Still researching if I can go better than a T7500 for the upgrade.
Thanks, John.

Hi Matey well i had to strip it right down to the board and that was the only option, as Samsung are tight with there service manual's and i could not source one on the internet. if your laptop has the latest bios you should be fine. if you need any further assistance let me know.
check the bay for the Cpu.

I have updated my bios and went sailing on the bay last night... got a T7500 for $66 so will have to figure out how to dismantle the R70 when it arrives... :)

New CPU for the R70 arrived, had it up and running in a couple of hours.
Most of the time taken was trying to figure out how to get into the motherboard .
Having built a couple of dozen PC boxes in my time this is tthe first laptop I have had apart..... recon I could do the job in half an hour now I know how it was put together.
The new CPU is a great improvement, going from 1.66GHz to 2.2GHz. :)

Nice one, it should make a difference to the performance. laptop's are fiddly and a bit scary the first time round but its good experience, well done :D

Enjoy i'll be doing the same asap.
