Samsung resolution issue

Hi all,

Hopefully someone can help this poor muppet out of a spot.

I've just taken delivery of a lovely new Samsung 2232BW but am unable to get the monitor resolution up to 1680*1050.

I have installed the monitor driver from the CD and can quite happily set the desktop resolution to 1680*1050.

However, the monitor resolution is at 1440*900 therefore making my desktop bigger than the monitor.

My graphics card is an ATI x1950 pro 512Mb connected via an analog cable (I don't have a long enough dvi cable yet) and using the Catalyst 7.7 drivers.

I've tried installing the MagicTune software but it told me my computer wasn't compatible.

Any ideas on the resolution issue?

thanks for any help

Willow

I've now tried turning the monitor and pc on and off in every conceivable combination at different resolutions but still no luck

I'm also hearing a hum coming from the monitor as well, I'm sure that never used to be there.

* edit - OK this appears to be because the brightness was turned quite low, the lower the louder, thing is, without it low the screen is quite bright *

not to mention the (what I think is called) light bleed all round, mainly from the top, hence the reason to want to turn the brightness down.

I feel a call to Samsung coming on.

I've tried this now with a different vga cable and a DVI cable and am pleased to report that the monitor now seems to work a treat.

Just have the issue now with backlight bleed, is this a common problem with this monitor does any body know?

Interesting, adjusting "brightness" reduces backlight bleed. With it at "0" and contrast at "40" much more even. In games it's not too dark either. Will try some more games

Adjusting the brightness down made a bit of a difference but I now get quite a noticable hum from the monitor

No hum here. Brightness set at "3" there is a slight amount of bleed along the top edge, and the far right. However it's far better than before, and less bleed than my Philips 20". Video doesn't look dark so I think OOTB settings (brightness & contrast) are far too high. With contrast at default it looks similar to Samsung LCD "Dynamic" mode, far too high. Got it at 40 and more pleasing to the eye.

Head-on (moving head to the right over the bleed) makes it go away, I guess TN poor viewing angles coming into play here. I'll try laying it flat overnight and see if that helps.

Is there a pattern to those that get backlight bleed and those that don't, I don't want to return mine and get a replacement that suffers from the same issue but I certainly can't live with the blled and the hum.

Are there any alternative gaming monitors? I've had a quick play in games and it's definietly faster than my Philips 20" spin around in Tomb Raider and it's smooth and sharp, with the Phlips it blurs.

Laid the Samsung flat overnight, with brightness at full it's more even, the centre square bleed is now gone, however along the right edge there's a couple of brighter areas that weren't as bad as before. In the top right there's a brighter area that hasen't gone away. No dead pixels.
