Hey guys

Just a quick question whilst i'm looking at new monitors. Can you use the Samsung S27A950D with an nvidia card and still get 3D functionality or is it for ATI cards mainly??

You can use the 3D vision emulator with the monitor and it works a treat.

Google it for instructions on how to setup ;)

Samsung uses a non-vendor-specific proprietary 3D solution delivered by what is dubbed the '3D HyperReal engine'. You use the included TriDef drivers for stereoscopic 3D for game titles that support it for the full 3D effect. The monitor can also apply this 'full' operating mode to supporting 3D Blu rays and the like if you use proper movie software. Alternatively you can use on-the-fly 2D-3D conversion which works on anything but works better on some things than others and gives a weaker effect (without straining the GPU). The only potential Nvidia issue comes from a driver problem that means TriDef tends to run in 'Side by Side' rather than 'Frame Sequential' mode - halving the horizontal resolution much like a passive 3D system. I am not a huge fan of 3D in games and haven't tried SBS mode so can't really comment. As above it is possible to use Nvidia 3D Vision as an unofficial ('hacked') alternative but that's extra expense thst I don't think is worth it at all.

Absolutely. When reviewing it I was more impressed by the overall 2D experience than the 3D one. The 3D was nice in little doses but really I saw this as a bonus rather than an essential feature.

Ah that's very subjective. :p The problem is I liked aspects of both of them. I don't think I am entirely won over by the asymetric stand and large 'footprint' of the SA950 series although it was certainly eye-catching. I think the chrome-cased central stand of the SA750 is a better design. I do like brushed metal though and there was plenty of that on the SA950 - although most of it was on the back which is probably going to be facing a wall. :p

Other design features to note. I like the thin bottom bezel of the SA750 and the bezel is that thin all the way around. The SA950 does have a thinner bezel at the top and sides (10mm for the SA950 vs. 15mm for the SA750). Aside from the uniformity issues and slightly better contrast on the SA750 the performance was very similar really. So yeah. Tricky. ;)

I haven't actually checked, is there the "cheap" version of the 27" screen?

The 23 " 700D is all but identical to the 750D, dvi instead of displayport(both have hdmi) and a "normal" stand rather than the lump on the 750d, but same screen, tech, everything else.

For 2d it's fantastic, I'm not sure how up there it is with IPS panels these days, its better than my pretty old IPS and leagues ahead of my not that old TN screen. It's gorgeous, I'm AMD though, I've had it for 2 months or so and barely used 3d. Whacked on a few films, meh, still haven't tried gaming as honestly I just don't feel the urge to and keep forgetting to sort it out :p

Anyway the 23" versions the 700d is £100 cheaper than the 750d, for all but identical screens its quite laughable, if there was a 27" 700D, I'd recommend that. I'd also say, as PCM2, buy it for 2d, you might like 3d, you might love 3d, you might hate 3d. Even if you love 3d most of the content you can watch or play will either be 2d only, or 3d won't work well with certain games. Think of 3d as a bonus on top of a truly excellent 2d screen.

There is no extra expense at all, that is incorrect. The 3D Vision hack mentioned is purely a software hack and uses the monitors built in emitter and bundled glasses.

The 3D Vision hack merely tricks the Nvidia drivers into thinking the built in emitter is a 3D Vision emitter, thus enabling 3D Vision in the Nvidia Control Panel.

I've only played with 3D with this monitor. It wasn't the reason I purchased it.

The 120hz gaming is just heaven.

Ah right. As a current non-Nvidia user I wasn't aware that this was the nature of the hack. And it isn't something I would condone from my deep respect for Samsung and their already excellent technology. ;)

haha i definately sniff a hint that you're liking the 750d a tad more ;)

Yes but not as much as my co-worker who bought one. He might sell it to me on the cheap if I want it though because he feels it is just a little too big for him. But 23" is too small.

Not currently and not sure if this is planned. Samsung didn't rule it out when I asked them but I doubt the person I asked would have much say in the matter anyway.

Thinking of butiny this (my 50th Birthday) Bet its pricy?

Hi,
I'm so pleased they (Samsung) released this product, I'm really thinking of buying this one for the Summer of 2012 to replace my 4 year old Ingram Micro 20 inch 4.3 (which I have to say has served me very well). I have just splashed my Bonus (I work in IT support / Industrial and Military PC manufacturing, we had a great 2011), on a D7000 46 inch Led with 5.1 3D Blu Ray system, so am v-happy atm, but I do want to upgrade my main PC monitor - I have a second PC running the hacked Nvision through the Samsung TV, and I have to say BF3 is pure delight in 3D as is MW3 too and Skyrim. This monitor should be compatable with the Samsung Bluetooth 3d glasses should it not???

I watch d/loaded 3D Imax movies via the PC (GTX 260 GFX card) from the HDMI attached to the TV, and my main PC has a GTX560 TI so should pair well with this monitor.
very happy with Samsung atm... Great products.;)
