Weird question perhaps so apologies and yes I am quite out of date with things. :o

I am pondering an iPhone (never owned one!) but want to ensure I am 'stepping up' - surely iPhone 10 would be immensely better? Would an 8 be the same as a Samsung S9?

I am expecting short and simple answers so all good. :)

Going from any android phone to an iPhone is stepping up. Welcome to the family!

On a serious note, the X came out 5 years ago so you very likely won’t get a new one and will likely have to replace the battery. Bit of a pain. It along with the 8 has limited support for the latest iOS so won’t be able to get the latest updates next year.

What is your budget?

Some consider the lack of a back button as a significant step down. Also, USB2.0 speeds. :D

Regarding the OP's ask --- if your budget is £400, then you're right, that's the ballpark for series XS iPhones. Make sure that you get it from reputable sellers that properly do their refurbs like Music Magpie (meaning you get a decent battery). I will recommend that you go for at least the 11 Pro Max if you can stretch your budget, but the X/XS series have a classic design that still holds its ground to this day.
