I premised my self a decent TFT by May and it’s creeping nearer and nearer, I read the excellent review of the NEC MultiSync® LCD20WGX2 20.1 on this very site but worried about the reflective display, so my second choice was the SM-97OP great viewing angle 1000:1 contrast etc, but I since found out that there is no OSD instead you use software to adjust brightness colour etc, which does not appeal to me at all, (the less software running the better) now my question which Samsung still have not answered me, has anyone got this monitor?
1: Does the software have to run in the background all the time?
2: If not I take it the monitor must remember the settings?
I had a third choice which was the Viewsonic VP930 19 but the viewing angle was not as hot plus one review I found stating colour banding on grey scales.
If you have a Samsung I would be very interested In any comments you have, many thanks

I am not sure if you need to leave MagicColour running all the time for this screen, but i dont THINK you do. I'm pretty sure you can install it to calibrate your screen / graphics card and then uninstall if you wanted to.

One thing i noticed which i wanted to ask you was, In what way are the viewing angles on the VP930 inferior to those on the 970P?

Both viewing angles should be pretty comparable in real terms. The VP930 is an excellent screen, arguably the best all round screen in the market right now. If anything, grey banding is more of an issue on the 970P since it uses 6 bit colotr depth (despite it's PVA panel) and shows unfortunate dithering artefacts and poor dark tone recognition.

I could not find the review about the grey scale problem but have found another about the colour on the Viewsonic VP930 http://www.nforcershq.com/article4886.html also a discussion about the said monitor and the Samsung SM-970P
http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=31&threadid=1819499 all ads to confuse me even more, I may come back to the NEC in the end, I will try to view one somewhere and see how reflective it is.
When I referred to the viewing angle on the Viewsonic VP930 I was just being picky 170 compared with 178 on the Samsung not an issue I know.

1:

No, I switched mine off in "msconfig"

2:

Yes

I only installed magic tune so I can calibrate when i want to but it's not running in the back ground.
I won't pretend that the sofware is any good, but it more than makes up for it by having a clean monitor (no buttons) and the build quality is excellent.

Shock I just had an email from Samsung on the software question I asked does the software need to run in the background
The software will need to be run in the background to allow the control
of the settings, however this i can imagine will be an idle process and
only use resources when in use, it may of course use a little resources
to keep the program running but this should be minimal. around 8MB of
memory used, dependant on the number of programs you run to change these
settings as there are a few provided which are optional.
Once the settings are set they should remain so until changed or reset,
this would probably be achieved by storing a small file containing
"configuration" settings which can be re-loaded, this is assuming they
are the same as our older models that feature no OSD, however they may
have a small amount of memory onboard which could be used to store this
but we unfortunately do not have specifics on this model yet as it is
very new.
Thanks Steve you have answered my question and confirmed what I was hoping for, so you sound really happy with your SM-970P I really appreciate you answer, because if it’s anything like my CRT monitor I never fiddled with the brightness etc once it was setup that’s great, many thanks

That's a bummer :(
I thought that most manifactures were over coming that nowadays with better processes.
Did you think about sending it back under the "distant selling act"?

I did, but I thought I'd put up with it. Eventually the missus wants this one, so I'll just buy a 2nd and give her this, she said that would be perfect :)

Samsung won't do anything either as its not in my main field of view (bottom left corner, 2 1/2 inch across and 2inch up).

Thats the prob, the dead pixcel policy of most companies sound good but then once you read into it, X number of pixcels, x number of sub pixcels etc....
At least it's not in your main feild of view. There's a programe I've seen mentioned on here somewhere that is suposed to help with stuck pixcels....may me worth a try if you haven't already:)
