Samsung T220 DVI Problem

So,I bought a T220 (standard not HD) to connect to a Gigabyte GTX 260.Connects fine using a VGA cable, with a VGA - DVI adapter at the graphics card end and connected into the VGA port on the monitor.

When I try connecting the supplied DVI cable to the monitor and the DVI port on the card 80% of the time the monitor will flash in standby mode. When I push the 'source' button on the side of the monitor I get 'check signal cable' message.

The 20% of the time I can actually get an image,it is hugely stretched.I have to move the mouse to the edges of the screen to scroll up-down-left-right.Checking the resolution shows that the monitor is in 1680 x 1050.Also,strangely,I get the option of selecting resolutions that are significantly higher.

Would the fact that the port on the monitor is DVI-D not DVI be making the difference? Or is this a monitor or cable problem?

Thanks in advance.
