Samsung to buy AMD, rumor?

In the thread in the CPU section some seem to think Samsung would only focus on mobile products if they did takeover.

Agreed, AMD need a kick and Samsung could provide that.

Samsung only stopped selling laptops in Europe last year, now they are buying a GFX/CRU manufacturer if this is true.

Only see this As a good thing personally.

Even though i dislike Samsung mobile phones with a passion (plastic junk) i would love to see someone of their power take over AMD.

Samsung know how to market products for a start, they have buckets of cash available, a 14nm Foundry, and i can see them wanting to compete on all fronts and they like nothing better than a challenge.

I can see them fighting Nvidia, Intel, Qualcomm etc for the lions share of all the markets, They are known for TV's, Mobiles, Monitors etc, they are a multi tech company. So it makes zero sense to buy AMD for just its subpar CPUs / APU's, especially when it has a semi sucessful GPU department with a lot of years of delivering products (might not always be the best but they try)

That would be bad, they need to be a competitor to NVidia or it will be bad for the consumer.

Agreed, I would hope they go toe to toe with Intel in the CPU market and nVidia in the GPU market but getting that share back will take time and they might see it as too much of a risk. The discrete GPU market is tiny compared to the overall market though.

I believe this has nothing to do with AMD and everything to do with Samsung<>nVidia who've had a bit of tit for tat lately - Samsung acquiring AMD (or hinting about it) is kind of a shot across the bow as it would mean Samsung could put the hurt on nVidia much easier with direct access to one of their biggest markets.

EDIT: Not to say there aren't other plans on the table but I think its one of the bigger driving factors for why its rumoured.

See, i reckon they would fight all fronts, Samsung are dominant and like to be known as dominant, they advertise everything and everywhere.

I can see them looking at the market share Nvidia has, looking at the AMD products that are normally so nearly there but fail on a few issues, and the lack of marketing etc, and seeing a prime opportunity to make a lot of money

That's what you would like to see but just being a huge company already doesn't mean you will automatically do well in another market.

We'll have to wait and see what comes of it I guess.

I'd sooner see Sammy go it alone so we have 3 GPU devs.

This would probably be a better option for us as consumers.

Innovation isn't exactly Samsung's strongest suit, is it?

Unless Apple start making GPUs, how will Samsung know which design they should copy?

Samsung make good quality products across the board. They are no more or less innovative than any other large tech firm. Including Apple, who pilfered pretty much everything featured on the iphone from things that had gone before.

Keep saying that to yourself.. Mr shareholder at amd.

Lol
I love how so many people on here think they know so much about how ones company is doing sales or profit..

It's quite funny.. To see people become Mr business man..

On this news (add extra salt) I think I should get some AMD stocks... you never know do you :D ?

They might do an Apple on us in 2-3 years

If this had even a shade of truth wouldn't there have been some movement in AMD's share price? Which just today dropped another 5%...

Could potentially be the best thing to happen to the GPU industry for ages.

I've been with AMD from 5870, 7970s and now 290Xs but Let me be real for a second:

Even with the 290s being overall a succes AMD were just treading water (with boosted crypto mining sales). However since the 290 launch we've seen 4 unanswered GPUs from Nvidia, mantle slipping into obscurity and all we have from AMD as a response over the last year are price cuts and late drivers.

The 390x will (like the 290x) be a good card, it will beat a 980. Maybe it will come close to the Titan but won't beat it, along comes the 980ti a few months later and it's the same old story from AMD for another year (too little too late), price cuts to compete, less profits, loosing more ground to Nvidia. That's not even talking about the disaster that is the CPU division of AMD.

Something needs to change, hopefully this is it.

Why so defensive? It would be fantastic for AMD to get snapped up and become competitive again. Intel dominate and charge sky high prices and nVidia dominate and charge sky high prices. A competitive Samsung would mean competition with the amount Samsung has available to inject into R&D.
